I made that same jump -- just that my 2.4 was overclocked to 3.0
I didnt notice a whole lot -- since i'm video card limited in games (9800pro)-- so you have to consider that first
bootup times are faster, but multitasking is worse

I would try up your 2.4 to 3.0 first and then hold off till dual core comes

oh man -- there are so many people like you....
dell crapbox? or something more sinister? :p

intergrated graphics? why are you thinking of upgrading the cpu then??

cs? you can play that on a p2 -- the graphics are so shite

just for simple comparison, running a 6800gt my p4 2.4c @ 2800 would get me about 10,400 on 3dmark 03. the 3200+ at stock is 11,200 both using stock speed on the vga.

is it the 800FSB or 533FSB version? you are definately video card limited. does your m/b have a agp slot? if it does, i would look in the fs/ft section and pick up a used 9800pro with a r360 core.

if you do not have a agp slot, you will need to build a new machine because, in your case you need a decent graphics card.

when you say you can not get into the bios, is it like a compaq or dell?

if that is the case your best bet will be to build a machine with a skt 939 nforce 4 chipset, a64 3000 winchester core and get a board with pci-e and get a 6600gt pci-e card. excellent setup for the money.

you will probably see some differences, but not much because surfing and word processing doesn't take much cpu power. i would look at the different benchmarks if you are doing any type of encoding for a fair comparison. if it is a 800FSB 2.4c, you could probably sell it for a decent price if you went the a64 route because the northwoods are excellent o/c cpus. at this point i would not recommend getting a different skt478(p4) board because those are going to have agp slots, and pci-e is the way to go, and usually the pci-e graphics cards are a little cheaper than their agp versions. what sux is the power supply and the fact that you may need a new one.

how much ram and what speed is it? if you are not sure run cpu-z(google it)

what model vaio?

if you go with dfi make sure you visit dfi.street first. the boards can be very particular about what ram you use and psu requirements, especially needing a native 24 pin connector.

the 20-24 pin connectors are not a good idea with the dfi boards?
