How Much Space?

Hey guys, i just need abit of help deciding which hdd to buy. My current computer has 30gb total space, with 5gb left. What hard drive space do you guys recommend? I don't want to buy overkill. My new computer will be used for casual gaming, work, and entertainment. Will 80gb be enough? Thanks.

I have an 80GB and I cant imagine wanting more space. using 8.12GB time to clean

IF you believe in rebates then go out and get the biggest drive that you can for 40.oo after rebate. You should be fine.

I currently have 120 and with the video edit and ISO storeing i do (i use alcohol alot keep from hveing to have CD"s around) i am am unhappy with the space..
I am building my new rig as we speak... and i ordered 828 gigs of space. well accutlly 674gig. I am useing 2 Seagate 300gig SATAs for storage and programs and all... and 2 Raptor 74GB's in raid (to mirror eachother as backup) for the OS.

I've got 120 Gb and I'm planning on getting a 200Gb HDD now.

Based on that usage, 80GB should be just fine. If you plan to add a load of new games, they might take up more than 1GB each, some even more than 4GB. Or if you want to add a lot of video or large audio files, like backing up your CD/DVD collections, know that they can chew up space like there's no end to it.

hmmm interesting replies. my budget is around 150 CAD, so i was thinking either the wd caviar se 80gb or the seagate barracuda 250gb satas. i want to be able to play games like hl2, bf2, cs:source, doom3, morrowind, neverwinter nights, far cry, etc. i will not be purchasing those games at the same time tho, probably over the course of 1 year MAYBE. right now i'm leaning towards the 80gb.

Wtf, not everyone needs 160GB of storage space...

To the OP: 80GB should be fine for your needs. You can always buy another drive in the future.

80 gb is probably fine but you could probably get a 120gb or 160gb drive for not much more. You can always get more storage later. I have 2 120 gb hard drives now. I don't need that much storage but I got them one for $69 and one for $30 after rebates so I have more than enough storage for awhile.

Unless the OP doesn't have a Serial ATA controller. It's probably safe to assume a new rig would have a MB with one, but it would suck for him to find out the hard way. I'd say 120GB should keep you happy, but you should get the biggest drive you can afford.

As long as you're not going to store a lot of movies/games on your drive, 80ish will be fine imo.

But if you're one that prefers to copy the game/movies to your HD so you don't have to continually change CDs, then you're going to need much more space. But it's not really that expensive--check Hot Deals...I just picked up 160GB for $50 (though that was to replace my recently deceased 160GB drive).

But really, you can always start out a little small (80ish) and then get a second drive if you think it isn't sufficient. Computers have more than one slot for HDs
