The chain itself usually holds up in most cars but most 4cyls/OHC cars with chains have the guides/tensioner/etc... wear out and/or just break. The Nissan Sentra use to be bad for that. The chains would have so much slack it would slap the timing cover and wear a hole in it.

Under normal use, chains are rarely replaced.

Not unless it breaks. They don't have a "required replacement" interval.

I have a 2000 grand am. I heard its wise to get the chain replaced at around 90k because they are prone to wearing out
