Dawheat is dead on correct.

I live in a luxury building on 23rd st and have for over five years. Here's how the tips break out for me:

1. Porters: $40-50
2. Doormen $80 (except for $100 for the really cool guy)
3. Handymen $100
4. Super $150

I STRONGLY urge you not to take any advice from people who don't live in Manhattan because they will have no clue wtf they're talking about. Manhattan is unique unto itself and the tip rate is much higher than just about anywhere else. Sorry, but that's the case.

Your building should give you a list of people working and how long they've been working there. Obviously if someone is new or only been there a few months, they shouldn't get a full tip. And tip on the low side at your own peril. They are all union and they do all talk. If you stiff one guy, expect everyone to know about it.

Edit: I missed the 'right off' part. Hah. OK. I have no idea what you tip in Hoboken. The difference between Hoboken and Manhattan is the same difference between a bullet thrown and a bullet fired.
