How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

You still in college? Working? Making loads of the green stuff?

I was working in college and spent just under $2500. Yep, it's a nice ring. And now that I'm married, I'll probably not see that much money again until I'm 40. 🙁

as much as you can afford...
Hmmm I don't know I do have credit cards but I hate to use those.

$500 would be too much for me.
I am thinking something in this ballpark, perhaps a little bit more.

I have a modest income, we then have to pay for the wedding and honeymoon. Who wants to start out with alot of debt from a wedding.

Wife didn't want an engagement ring, we used the money for a down payment on a house.
I just did that too, just bought a house last week. So the savings is getting smaller and smaller.

I think I'll spend about 14K when I get married. Theres another diamond thread floating around somewhere and got me thinking about this.

I'm going to buy something that retains value, about 1.25 carats, flawless or Internally flawless and must be D.

That way if you get in a tight spot you can sell it. and make sure you get terms set beofre you get married that says you get the rock back if you split up.

my brother spent about 2000, I think.

it really depends on the girl. you just want to get something that compliments her finger...for example, if she is really small, there is no reason to go crazy with a huge ring that will overwhelm her finger, you know?

anyways, personally, I think a smaller ring that is of better quality is better than a big ring with low quality.

congrats, btw! 🙂

This is the stupidest thinking I've even read on ATOT. so you want to spend a sh*t of money on something that is grossly inflated in price, so that when you need the cash, you can sell it at a discount later on? you know what, the market for a flawless or IF D diamond isn't that great, most people that own one or want to buy one would not want to buy it from a guy that need to sell it because he needs the money. So most likely you will have to co-sign it at a store, and they will take 30% or more of the selling price. diamond is NOT an investment. I paid about $4000 for my engagement ring, so I know what I am talking about. 😉 I bet when you are ready to buy, you will most likely ended up buying a F-G .7 to 1 carat ring. Mark my word.

good luck,
Rich

I spent $4500, but I'm out of college and have a nice job. It's small, but the quality is close to as good as you can get.

I spent around 6k..

But do yourself a favor, buy a loose diamond (diamond.com or bluenile.com etc..) and have it set locally.. Then have it appraised by a gemoligist or whatever they are called.

I'm not too sure about 14k or the ring retaining it's value or the whole

but thanks for the reply, lol.

depends on how much you like the girl
I am rather fond of her but I don't think that an expensive ring will make me like her more and it shouldn't make her like me more. I have seen all too often people spending too much and getting divorced before they even had the wedding payed off.

$0.25 plastic is in this year.
So where do you get that?

Ummm I have to agree with that

I picked out my own engagement ring. It was no more than $500. For me, its what the ring symbolizes not how much it costs. We also just bought our wedding rings last week (wedding is in less than 2 months). Those only cost us $300 combines. But we are having a kick@ss wedding, and a nice honeymoon.

Golly, I wish my wife was as frugal as you are. You rock! (No pun intended...)
