A friend of mine is selling a Pentium 4 631 retail boxed cpu.
It runs prime stable at 4.9ghz @ 1.4v.
see the screeny here.
He's asking for $200, should I get it or should I get a brand new one, and take a chance?

Overclocked. I think the OP is asking if he should get this chip, which is proven to be able to hit 4.9GHz, or if he should take a chance on a retail P4 631.

personally, I don't think this P4 is worth it. @ 4.9 Ghz it's going to need one heck of a good cooler to keep your house from burning down ;). If you just buy the boxed proc, you'll likely hit 4.2+ Ghz and still have the option to RMA it if something is wrong with it. I don't think a P4 at nearly 5 GHz is good for everyday usage at all.

no i think he means his friend is selling hte retail version cpu he got, which was oc'ed to 4.9, and is wondering if 200 is worth it.... ill say no since it will require additional cooling thus will cost you over 200, which is no longer worth for a p4

No, play the "your my best friend! youve always been there for me!" card and try to get him to knock $100 off of it. Then it should be worth it.
