I found a dealer that still has a new 2001 Honda Prelude (200hp) (regular).
He's asking $24k (has all the options)

I can get a 2002 Nissan Maxima GXE (255hp) for $22.5K

Do you think it's reasonable to ask $20k for the car?
Do you think it's a good deal at $20k?
I'm not sure how much price drops because it is 1 year old, but it's new.

Do you want a sports car or a family car? The prelude will only seat two normal sized people comfortably and is considered more of a "sports" car. The nissan is most likely faster of the line, but it won't handle as well. The nissan will also be able to lug around 4 people more easily. The preludes are out of production here if that matters to you.... and since they are out of production you might be able to get a really good deal on one. If I were you I wouldn't pick which car based on price, I would try to pick the car based on what you are looking for in a car.

my friend paid 23 for when the car was in production..that was last year in june.
I would suggest to haggle.. try and get it to 22. If the dealer has an internet sales dept, fire them an email and see what they come with.. dont mention you walked in earlier and got a 24K quote.

I test drove both cars and loved Prelude. I want the Prelude, but I don't want to overpay for the car that's 1 year old. I was going to see, if he will take 20K for the Prelude, but I'm not sure if that's a good price.

If you want some help with buying a new car go this SITE. Its called Edmunds and it will give you all the info you need on the pricing of the vehicle and dealer allowances and hold backs. This is all very useful info as you can go back to the dealer and show them what the car should actually cost.

You might want to try driving a subaru WRX, depending on whether you like it's style or not.

If it's been sitting on the lot for so long, they should be itching to dump it....get the invoice price first. Then see how low you can go :)

Try and get it to 22? From 24 asking price, that's not haggling. My mom could do that.

I'd say $20K is a reasonable offer, but you could probably offer less than that. Here's one on Ebay from a dealer (recognize it?), 2001 Prelude. The dealer quotes $24K sticker, $21K invoice, and it's only up to $17K right now with a day left.

Remember, if you buy it immediately changes from being a new car to a 2-year old model with low miles. Your resale isn't going to be any better just because it sat on a dealer's lot for 1-2 years.

I wish that car was available in Ohio, I would definately bid on it.

The dealer I was going to buy isn't even moving on the price.. He wants $23,700 for it.

$23,700 is highway robbery...way too much for an orphaned leftover that already has 1 year depreciation built into it (even if it has 0 miles). You say it is the "regular". Do you mean it is not the SH? If it is not the SH, then anything over $20K is ridiculous. The SH is worth more, but it's not worth $23,700. I'd say $21,000 max. The Prelude has always been a little overpriced and it's value proposition is worse now that it is an orphan and newer, more exciting models are on the market.

Tell the dealer that he mustn't care about inventory costs for keeping a 2001 model so long. Suggest that his asking price is out of whack and is why the car remains unsold. Go ahead, don't be afraid to "insult" him. You don't get anything from most dealerships unless you throw your weight around and demand action on prudent pricing.

Laugh and walk away.

Lets say this guy got this car at the end of the 2001. At best, it's been sitting on his lot for 3 months. The the dealer sits on the car, the more its value decreases, and the more money in interest the dealer is losing to keep it on the lot. If he has a bit of sense he'll come down on the price because in a few more weeks, he's going to start having to take a loss on that car.

I love Preludes.

Which one is this, the base, or the SH? The SH, IIRC will be $1500-2000 extra.

Yeah,
I am going to call him and tell him to give me a call if he's willing to sell it for $20k.
If he's willing to sell it for that price, I would buy it right now..

If it's the base, you might get lucky, but if it's the SH, I doubt you've got a deal. I can't find info on this car at Edmunds anymore, so I can't make a very educated guess.

I'm not sure what you meant by regular, but according to Edmunds 20k is just OK, and that's on the Type SH.

But that link is for a used car, which the car in question is not. You've got to find out the invoice, incentives, and holdback for that particular model, and don't expect to get any of that holdback, just know it so you can counter their "we'll lose money" arguement.
