How much should a tux rental cost? (for a wedding)

I went to get fitted today for a tuxedo for my good friend's wedding (I'm in the party). There seems to be some discrepancy about who should pay for the tux, the groomsmen or the couple. My mind hasn't been made up yet one way or the other, but I will say I was a little surprised at the cost to rent the tux ($120 at Men's Warehouse). Now I don't know if it's customary for me to pay for this or not, or if this is an average tux price, having never rented one before myself. But I would think that if it is implied that the groomsmen are going to be paying for their tuxedos, the couple should be keeping the cost in mind above the style of the tux.

Enlighten me.

I wouldn't expect it to be the responsibility of the couple to pay for it... I'd like to know though... I'll be part of a couple in Sept.

This should have been decided beforehand. The groomsmen should probably get together and go ask the couple about it. $120 is about average for a nicer tuxedo rental.

My best friend is getting married a month from today... the tux rental was $20 down and $80 when I pick it up, I think. They're going through After Hours.

The groomsmen pay for their tux at the time. The groom is supposed to give a gift to his groomsmen and traditionaly pays for the tuxes as that gift, but he can do whatever he wants.

As for the price 120 is steep but i thought the groom always picked the tux out ahead of time.

My last prom i rented a tux for ~80 at "goodies" and it was rather nice.

If you have a choice shop around and try to get it under 100, if you can't find one good enough then 120 is a reasonable price for the perfect tux.

I'm a cheap ass and disagree with it, but typically the groomsmen pay for their own tuxes even though they were asked to be in the wedding - same for the bridesmaids. They pay for their own dresses as well.

Typical prices should run $50 for barebones no frills tux, up to $75-$100 depending on how fancy everything is. $120 seems high.

When I was in a wedding about 2 years ago I paid $75 for a full tux, vest, shoes, and cufflinks.

I had to rent a tux a couple of years ago and it was $250. Good thing I used to go out with a girl that works there so she got it for me for free. 😀

You could try checking around with the other groomsmen and see if you can't go in together and get a group rate and maybe get matching tuxes that way as well.

he's right.

well, seems to be tradition for the groomsmen to pay. but i'm still a little miffed about the price. the couple can't just go pick out whatever tuxes they want and expect the wedding party to pay whatever price it is.

plus the couple are filthy rich!

*edit* megalo and freesiac, it's going to be hard to sell my cheap (rich) friend on that one!

My husbands tux for the wedding was $140. One thing that increased the cost of a tux are different vests(ones that arent included in the package). And also.. its the responsibility of the groomsmen to pay for their own tuxes. As with the bridesmaids to pay for their own dresses. Its part of the responsibility in being a groomsman. As for the gift. Yes some groom give the gift of the tux rental cost, but i prefer a more tangible gift, something they can keep.

I don't agree with asking someone to be in you wedding and then telling them they have to pay for the tux. But that's the way it is.

We paid for the wedding party's tuxs. The wedding was out of town and we paid for the hotel rooms too. Just seemed like the right thing to do.

On Long Island, about 7 months ago, I spent $120 on the tux, and that was after the guy cut me a 20% break. Included everything except a top hat, belt, and cane(included shoes, pocket square, tie, etc). Doesn't seem like a bad price at all.

The last wedding I was in I paid for the tux and it cost about 102, I thought that was rather cheap most tuxes I have had to pay ussualy upwords of 120 ussually.

Where exactly ? I'm here...

Groomsmen usually pay for their tuxes.

The prices you guys are quoting are really high. I went to a wedding expo, and signed up for a deal at Men's Warehouse's booth where the groomsmen get theirs for $59.99 and I get mine for free. 😀

The tuxes I've rented have all been between $100 and $150, so your price is not bad at all. The groom should get you all some kind of gift, like an engraved liquor flask or something to help soften the blow of paying for you own tuxedo.

I've paid more and I've paid less for wedding tux rentals. The only thing those tuxes had in common was that "I" had to pay. 🙁

I went to a wedding show last weekend, and men's warehouse was having a show special, all tux at $59.95, groom is free. the $59.95 includes EVERYTHING, even cufflinks and SOCKS and SHOES. I was orginally gonna go with another local chain that has better selections, but it would cost me at 130$ each, guess which place I am getting my tux from? 🙂 I think everyone is suppose to pay for their own tux, but the groom has to buy them a gift for the amount of the tux.

Yes we are required to pay for the tux. I need to get measured for mine, but I have a question. According to the groom, I can just go to any tux place and they will measure for free, is this true? He gave me a piece of paper w/ all the info for the place he chose, and apparently the place I get measured at faxes it to them?

I don't see why most people don't just go out and buy tuxedos. Even if you don't wear it often it costs $100 or so per rental , so just a few uses will amount to the same cost. Plus you don't have to deal with the hassle of going out each time and renting stuff, and you have something that fits properly and wasnt worn by a bunch of other guys before you.

120 seems about right for a good tux.

Every wedding I have been a part of, or know someone who has been apart of. The groomsmen/bridesmaid paid for their
rental or dress. It can be alot of money, but after seeing how much an actual weddings cost, I can understand why
the groomsman/bridesmaid pay for their own.
