How much should a good paintjob cost?

I'm looking to get my car(full size sedan) resprayed. Really the only bad parts on the car is the hood, the bumper, the roof, and decklid. An estimate by a bodyshop was $4795. That seems a bit steep for just wanting to get a respray to the original color without gutting the whole car.

If anyone knows a good place in Colorado, let me know:)

Seems real steep..something I've liked to do is a non-gloss satin finish like military vehic's so all you need to do is hose em down. Having a gloss finish on a truck that's used in 4wd ranch enviro.is a a waste and a maintance headache....

If there's a Maaco in your area, try them... they have really cheap paint services...

Of course, you get what you paid for in these cases...

$4795 .......what????? That is ridiculous(sp?) You need to check around, you'll find someone who will do it for $1000. I would not pay over $2000 unless the vehicle was going into a museum or something.

Heck, I just got my whole truck for $3,000.
Blain, I had to re-read your statement a couple of times. You got your WHOLE truck for $3,000? Not just the paint job, correct? If so, it looks like the owner sold you the truck for the price that they paid for the paint job. I like the rims - they look like they are from a late-60s or early-70s Chevrolet vehicle (Monte Carlo, Camaro, Corvette, etc.). Is the air intake on the hood just for "show" - or does the engine also have mods done to it?

The owner painted the truck himself. He's got a couple of other vehicles, all painted with the same colors and pattern. The colors are stock GM numbers.
The engine is only a 4.3L V6. But the he did do some mods to it. He added March Power Pulley's, HyperTech power chip, Flowmaster exhaust and Throttle body spacer.
Yes, basically the Harwood fiberglass hood is for show. The cowl is open to the engine compartment but not connected to the air cleaner.
The wheels are Corvette Rally's.

He also installed new shocks, brakes, distributor cap/module/wires, plugs and gave me an extra set of blocks to raise the rear 1". He said going up 1" makes the truck ride better.

I had a 2-door Volkswagen GTI (Golf: hatchback) done a few years ago for $1300 I believe, and it turned out great. None of this MAACO special of the week job or anything, it was a pretty good quality job. If you want to get something close to what comes from the factory, I'd look at spending closer to 2 grand.

A coworker of mine has a 1980 Camaro that's currently getting painted.

It had quite a few body blemishes, and the shop is fixing those before it gets painted. It's costing him just about $4000 for a complete body 'fixing' and a navy blue paint job with black racing stripes going the length of the car.

I can't wait to see it.

You can get them for $5-$25, depending on the part of town and what the girl looks like. Some of the higher class ones cost $50 and up, but you can be pretty sure that those ones don't have......uhhh....oh, you said PAINTjob  Sorry.
