How much refrigerant should I put in my car?

Hey all,

I have a 1989 Firebird Formula, and I just retrofitted it for R134A coolant. I drained out what was left from the R12, but didn't pull a vaccuum, as it's not necessary with the new coolant and oil. I put in one can of oil/lubricant, which gives 2 oz. of both, then I put in one can of R134A. The AC is running, and it works fine, but I don't know if I should add more oil, more refrigerant, or what? Is 2 oz. enough? If anyone knows some specifics, I'd appreciate it.

BTW, the reason I pnly put 2 oz. of oil in is because that's what comes in the can, and I got a kit once with one of those cans, that said it was universally a fine amount of poly ester oil to use with R134A.

My guess is that if you can see the refrigerant cycling through the little window above the small tank, then you probably have "enough" of it, as for the oil IHNI (I have no idea)😉

2 ounces is probably good, but the directions should say so.
You don't need much in the way of oil in the A/C system. One thing that
is recommended is replacing the reciever dryer as it traps a lot of the
oil in it and its not a good idea to mix R12 and R134a. I understand
that the two mixing will eventually produce an acid that isn't good for
the system. Another thing about R134-A is that it doesn't work as well
as R134-A because it typically runs at higher temps, so you don't need
to put as much in your system as you would R-12.
