I never new how much ram windows uses until i was messing around in win2k
I found out that with nothing running except bare essential, that my machine was using almost 70 megs of ram
and when i played quake it jumped to 160 megs of ram and hd usage. So how much ram do you use, and how much would you need today, what is the bare amount needed?

yeah this question is too vague.

my win2k machine with 256 megs does pretty much anything ive set it to do. my linux/win98se machine with 64 megs does the same thing.

how much ram do they use? i dont know but they have never crashed.

In windows 2k and in linux you can tell how much memory you use. Win 2k has a thing in task manager that tells how much you are currently using and how much you have peaked at since the computer had be turned on for that day or how ever long it has been on. I was just pandering on how much the average system uses, and what do people feel if they were building a system would be the minimum they would put into it.

and the computer usually does not crash since after the ram is used up the virtual memory is being used.
Basically for those who can tell how much memory they are using up at given instance wether when the computer is just started or when it is being used extensively

my install of win2k pro used 90-100M when doing nothing. (turn on active desktop and add 15M to that)

my new install of win2k server uses about 120-130 when doing nothing, so i upgraded from 256M to 384M, since i use lots of memory intensive apps at once.

RH Linux 6.2 w/KDE uses about 25-30Mb, when nothing else is loaded. With 96Mb of RAM I can live without any swapping (using Netscape, StarOffice etc.), half of the memory goes for disk cache'ing. 128Mb RAM is enough to run 5 X-terminals and console with all programs... Think how much cheaper can you go with linux (compared with Win2k), you don't even need a half gigabyte of RAM to browse internet and type some text :)

I'm using 101Mb with just IE & computer manager running. I have a total of 256 & IMHO that's the bare minimum (if you don't want swapping). I have 96Mb @ work and running more than two apps causes swapping.

It's a sweet OS but it sure is a pig :Q

At Startup Win2k uses 120MB of 256MB available. Win2k will use more RAM for the OS if it is available.

If I throw in another 128MB of RAM, win2k will probably take another 30-40MB just for the OS.

After I turned off the services I didnt need in Win2K I only used about 55MB at startup. I have 192MB of RAM and it runs fine on my system....

i have 128mb of ram on my win2k system and the task manager reports that the os is using around 180mb of memory... so if i increase my ram to 256mb, would there be an appreciable difference in the performance of the system as compared to 128mb?

thanx <G>

I have a question about "services" Currently i am using win2k in administrator mode. if i create a new user would my win2k be faster? Cuz i dont use any of these "services" In administrator mode.

usually 96MB or 128MB RAM is enough for W2K of course get 128MB just in case..if u get 256MB is the best option for multitasking.

W98/SE/ME... well 64MB is enough..again 128MB is the deal..nothing much to see if you have 256MB.

HAH! I am running Win2K on 64mb ram, and on a PII-266. It isn't that slow. I still play quake pretty well, and right now I have 4 programs running (IE, Napster, and IE again). It isn't that slow, but then again, I'm not that impatient.

Mine takes up about 70mb at startup. But I've gone throught the services and set to manual all that I don't need, no reason for them to start and just eat memory. Was running 128mb and just upgraded to 256 and really noticed the difference. For right now that's probably the sweet spot for memory requirements on my system. But with the way RAM prices are going, I may be tempted but I'll probably spend the money towards a new CDRW.

taylorm: control panel/administrative tools/computer management

expand "services and applications", select "services"

there's some services listed at NT Compatible which you can conceivably change to manual.

I'm somewhere around 110 out of 256MB when idle other than ActiveSync, DNetc, and IIS fot FTP and HTTP. (work machine)

Right now on my home box, I'm around 170 of 256 with 7+ IE windows open, DNetc, IE radio, ICQ, ActiveSync, etc.
