how much RAM can Redhat 7.3 support?

eP?

Senior member
I'm looking at buying a new server and I want it to have 4 GB of RAM. I've been searching on Google's and Redhat's site and even the forum, but I can't find anywhere that tells me how much RAM RH7.3 supports. I read somewhere that Kernel 2.4 will support up to 64 GB, but I want to know specifically if RH 7.3 will support the 4 GB I need it to support.

Yes, it will support it. There's a kernel option you'll want to enable for large memory amounts - IIRC, you want that option if you use over 1GB. The kernel config help file will tell you for sure.

It might not do it out of the box, you may need to recompile the kernel or just make sure you pick the correct kernel during install to support that.

During the installation you will want to specify the bigmem kernel. It will install this rpm for you and give it to you as an option with grub on bootup.

Thank you all for your help. I will continue with my server order and will probably go with more like 8 GB now.

Cheers.

Make sure you stick with a RedHat kernel, they include patches that havn't made it into the upstream kernel for various reasons and in certain configurations are a lot more reliable and HIGHMEM is one of those configurations.

Be careful, you're making us all drool here. 🙂
