Try to come even close to that (in both quality or price) in a shake. Its not even close. That and cholesterol is a test. precursor.

Soy and plant protein is a waste of time and money.

Oh god, not this again. That's almost 2 weeks of cholesterol in 12 eggs. How many times a day do you have to eat 12 eggs in order to get enough protein? Yes, eggs are a superior source of protein and other nutrients. That's undisputable. Not all of us have time to boil, crack, and peel eegs to eat all day. BTW, if you really want to spar in terms of price of cents per gram, it's about 1.1 cent per gram of protein in a shake.

Yeap, this again. :) Crap on too much cholesterol. Its fine. I do 6 eggs a day. And so far, Im suffering no ill effects. Not saying it'll stay that way, but then again, Id argue that gaining any weight over maintenance (muscle included) is not optimal for your body. If I suffer, Ill suffer later. Im fine with that.

But sure, I'll spar over price/gram f protein. Using the example above, that tub had 35 servings at 40 grams per. Thats 1400 grams per tub. At a cost of $60, that translates to 4.28 cents per gram. To get that in parity with the egg example, youd have to being the cost down to $19.60. Dont think you are going to find that anywhere. Even if you did, I'd still argue that the quality of egg protein is better than the powder.

I'm pretty squarely against supplements. I think they are too much money for an inferior product. I can get better for less by eating well.

I wouldn't argue that egg protein isn't better than powder b/c it is. But that tub of GNC crap is way overpriced. An average 5lb tub of Prolab - about a month's supply for $23. About 2 shakes a day, 2 scoops a shake. On average that's about 100 scoops per jug, 20gm per scoop, so 23 / 2000 = about 1.1 cent per gram.

Regarding eating better for less - lean meats like chicken, turkey, and some red meat isn't very cheap. It's harder for some people with their diets (I myself am asian if that gives you an idea) to get just massive amounts of pure lean meat in. Supplements sometimes are the only way to get that proper protein intake. (And fyi, I eat about 2-3 eggs a day, or try to anyway)

Oh Lord, here we go. Ok, Looking for a 5lb tub of Prolab protein on Froogle, the cheapest I could find was $27. That was of course before shipping. Ignoring that, lets assume we can get it for $27. A 5lb tub has 70 servings of 22g each. that means each tub has 1540 grams of protein in it. Divide that into 27, and we come to 1.7 cents/gram. Ok, you claim you can get it for 23 each. Hard to believe, but fine, lets assume its true. We now divide that 1540 into 23 and we get 1.5 cents per gram. Still higher than the cost per gram of protein in eggs.

I'll concede though, that once we get to those levels of marginal difference, it doesn't really matter.

*edit* And I understand that with some people it is hard to get large amounts of protein into their diets. They just have a different view on how to eat. Some try to get extra protein into ther existing diets. I on the other hand tailored my diet for that function.

Optimum 100% Whey is what I use and recommend. It tastes good and mixes well. I buy everything from BodyBuilding.com because it is cheap, cheap shipping and fast delivery. Plus I like to give them back business because their forums have helped me out tremendously.

Also, in response to the whole egg ordeal... Eggs are high in fat, unless you cook only the whites, and if you cook only the whites, it is really only half an egg, so you need double the egg whites to equal the same amount of protein. When I make eggs (with yolk), I make 3-4. When I make egg whites, I make 6-8. Plus separating the eggs is a pain compared to mixing powder and water in a shaker bottle.

All in all, I make eggs for a meal and drink protein for an in-between meal, so I like both.

Optimum is what I use as well.

Anything you buy from GNC is overpriced crap. That includes anything created by Nitrotech (threw that in there for you CT fanbois).

Eggs are high in saturated fat. Which is the fat that you dont want even if you are trying to gain weight.

Okay, so I should be drinking protein shakes with casein included to get a large enough amount. Meat and dairy are my friends (YAY), and GNC has high prices. Also, I have to take protein at the right times, since my body will otherwise waste it. Okay, got it. :p :D

Here is what the NFL does to strengthen and build up their guys. They have been in the business of making atheletes stronger and bigger for decades so they know their stuff. Pay attention to the nutrition section which goes against most of the advice that has been given here.
Players Strength and Conditioning Manual.

Are you comparing an NFL player to a guy that is trying to gain size?

Just because it doesn't have casein in it doesn't make it crap. It's not a wonder drug.

yeah, if your bulking up and working up, weightlifting you need at least 1 gram to a gram and a quarter of protein per pound (of what you weigh).

Too lazy too look up on the web right now, but it's pointless to consume more than 40 grams of protein in a 2 hour period. Your body simply can't process the excessive intake, and it will be dumped off in the relaxation room. Also, excessive intake of protein for a long period of time is not the best thing for your liver as its the organ that processes it. Just my $0.02. General rule is, your body weight (in lbs) X 1.3-1.5 = recommended protein intake in grams.

2 grams should be minimum, off course you can cycle down, cuz you can't grow all the time, you have to give your body a rest.
