...should I be shooting for if I'm trying to gain weight?

And is there a difference as far as muscle building is concerned between different proteins? Like protein from salmon vs protein from beans, or something.

Thank you.

well, if you are working out, you should get 30-40 grams more than your body weight.

So let's say you are 150 lbs, you should eat around 200 grams of protein per day.

Gah dam, I'm only 160 lbs (skinny, hi), and I'm getting nowhere near 200 g of protein a day.

As for the rose, just trying to keep things fresh! :D

for bulking up at least, 2 grams of protein per pound of lbm, i.e lean body mass.

you need to go to your local gym and have all the measurements done for you, so they can tell your lbm.

best source for protein, chicken, turkey, tuna, dairy products if you like.

take whey protein shakes, because you can't eat solid food all the time.

go buy two tubs of N-large. it tastes great and about 50 grams of protein per serving.

go ahead and give this a try.

remember always watch your protein intake while bulking. you may need to recycle your carbs off and on, but don't be negligent towards protein intake.

btw, how many meals are you taking,

i recommend you take 6 meals per day, with 50 grams of protein per meal. Initially, it will be hard but you will get used to eat.

try it out for at least 4 weeks and see the difference.

Too lazy too look up on the web right now, but it's pointless to consume more than 40 grams of protein in a 2 hour period. Your body simply can't process the excessive intake, and it will be dumped off in the relaxation room. Also, excessive intake of protein for a long period of time is not the best thing for your liver as its the organ that processes it. Just my $0.02. General rule is, your body weight (in lbs) X 1.3-1.5 = recommended protein intake in grams.

Unnecessary to bulk on protein shake before workout. In fact you should try to get some sort of insulin spike w/carbohydrates.

I weigh 175 and I get 200g+ everyday. Most of it is from Chicken, Tuna and Whey Protein Powder. There have been a lot of press lately about Soy Protein being junk and even causing health problems. There is definately a difference between meat, dairy and soy proteins. Stick with meat and dairy.

A protein shake with 2 scoops has about ~45-50g of protein, so if you drink 2 shakes a day, that's over half your protein... that's what I do.

Also, unlike fat/carbs, protein can't be stored for later use in muscle growth, so you need to be constantly on it. Take it last thing before sleep, and first thing in the morning.

bump for this. animal protein is far superior to plant protein as a muscle builder.

here is a protein powder i stronly recommend.

no it's not april fools joke. although it's priced high, it's the only (as of now) powder with casein added (which is found in cottage cheese & milk). Casein slows down your catabolism, which happens when your body tries to burn muscle for energy (instead of fat). Thus you burn more fat, add more lean muscle mass.

What are you talking about? NitroTech (even more overpriced) and Designer (new formula that came out about a year ago) both have had Casein that I know of off the top of my head. I'm sure there are plenty of others that have it included, I'm just too lazy to look it up.

NitroTech - lol, don't ask. :) Designer - the old formula before Casein was like 10lbs for $55. I'm sure the new one is a little more expensive, just not sure how much

Eggs eggs eggs eggs. Cant do better. Cheapest high BV protein you can get. Figure a dozen eggs costs a buck. 6 grams per egg. Thats 72 grams of high quality protein for a dollar. 1.4 cents per gram. Try to come even close to that (in both quality or price) in a shake. Its not even close. That and cholesterol is a test. precursor.

Soy and plant protein is a waste of time and money.

Oh god, not this again. That's almost 2 weeks of cholesterol in 12 eggs. How many times a day do you have to eat 12 eggs in order to get enough protein? Yes, eggs are a superior source of protein and other nutrients. That's undisputable. Not all of us have time to boil, crack, and peel eegs to eat all day. BTW, if you really want to spar in terms of price of cents per gram, it's about 1.1 cent per gram of protein in a shake.

Hrmm, I always thought you should try and take in the same number of grams as your bodyweight (i.e., if you weigh 150 lbs, you should try and intake 150grams of protein).

I'm trying to gain weight as well (started around 145lbs) and what I found to be effective was to eat constantly throughout the day.

When I wake up in the morning, I usually have a piece of fruit or an egg or something, plus a protein shake.

Mid morning (around 10) I usually snack on something.

For lunch, I eat a normal lunch.... maybe a turkey or roastbeef sandwhich and some veggies.

Mid adfternoon, I usually have a cup of yogurt.

Late afternoon, I usually have another protein shake.

I hit the gym around 6pm, and when I get home, I eat a regular dinner.

Then, right before I go to bed, i have another protein shake. I think the shake right before bed is the key, since I heard your body is craving protein during your resting phase (someone on this forum with a more biology background could verify this I hope).

So far, I've shot up about 15 lbs since beginning of february, and I weigh somewhere around 160 lbs now. (I'd weigh more, but I caught a pretty nasty cold for about a week which seriously affected my ability to eat)

Anyways, on a high protein diet, you should consume a LARGE amount of water. I've heard that high protein diets tens to put more strain on your kidneys (again, can't argue the validity of this... just going by what I've heard). Additionally, folks tend to not drink enough water on a daily basis as it is, and with lifting, you are sure to dehydrate yourself.

Just my $0.02

-Matt

Yeap, this again. :) Crap on too much cholesterol. Its fine. I do 6 eggs a day. And so far, Im suffering no ill effects. Not saying it'll stay that way, but then again, Id argue that gaining any weight over maintenance (muscle included) is not optimal for your body. If I suffer, Ill suffer later. Im fine with that.

But sure, I'll spar over price/gram f protein. Using the example above, that tub had 35 servings at 40 grams per. Thats 1400 grams per tub. At a cost of $60, that translates to 4.28 cents per gram. To get that in parity with the egg example, youd have to being the cost down to $19.60. Dont think you are going to find that anywhere. Even if you did, I'd still argue that the quality of egg protein is better than the powder.

I'm pretty squarely against supplements. I think they are too much money for an inferior product. I can get better for less by eating well.
