It depends on the stores & the merchandise. Most store try to have a markup of about 2.5X for order/non stocking/non-competitor items, and the common items are mark up at about 1.3-1.6X. However, there are items that are on sales purposely below cost or very close to cost to draw customers or to keep customers. Most stores break even if they get 1.3-1.4X margin because of operational costs (unless they can move a large quantity of the item).
