Is the actual truth here much better than the OP's claims?

Is 760,000lbs > 2 lbs?

you probably need to explain what ">" means

Ask a philosophical question, get a mathematical answer? ;)

Yes, that URL is correct, it is the RECOVERY.GOV and not some random blog.

And the MSM made fun of McCain for his "pork barrel project" obsession.

Want to know know how much 1.6 million dollars of mozzarella cheese buys?
http://www.recovery.gov/?q=con...ode=details&primeid=36

Irony, lol!!! Pork. I ran the math, this is .00733 barrels of pork.

Another self-ownage by the OP and Republicans (Drudge report)

The references to "2 pound frozen ham sliced" are to the sizes of the packaging. Press reports suggesting that the Recovery Act spent $1.191 million to buy "2 pounds of ham" are wrong. In fact, the contract in question purchased 760,000 pounds of ham for $1.191m, at a cost of approximately $1.50 per pound. In terms of the dairy purchase referenced, USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) purchased 837,936 pounds of mozzarella cheese and 4,039,200 pounds of processed cheese.

Is this R&D for department of AG?

edit:
According to the PDF it looks like it's for 20 2lb packs of ham, 1.54-1.57 bucks a lb

Quite a bit of umbrage at the guv'mnt for buying food for the newly poor.

Wish they would buy locally though -

Agriculture Sec. Vilsack: 'Purchased 760,000 Lbs of ham at cost of approximately $1.50 per pound'...

FOOD LION price, locally advertised: $.79 Lb...

Ham at $0.79 per lb.

Why don't the Democrats just give everyone who voted for them (the indigent demographic) a coupon for a ham? Instead of a chicken, like they used to?

Here is the US Sec of Ag defending his spending -

Release No. 0322.09
Contact:
Office of Communication 202-720-4623

Response to Drudge Item on Recovery Act Funding

Statement from Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack

"Through the Recovery Act, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has made $100 million available to the states for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which acquires food that is distributed to local organizations that assist the needy ? including food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens.

The Recovery Act funds referenced in press reports allowed states to purchase ham, cheese and dairy products for these food banks, soup kitchens and food pantries that provide assistance to people who otherwise do not have access to food. This program will help reduce hunger of those hardest hit by the current economic recession.

While the principal purpose of these expenditures is to provide food to those hardest hit by these tough times, the purchases also provide a modest economic benefit of benefiting Americans working at food retailers, manufacturers and transportation companies as well as the farmers and ranchers who produce our food supply."

I don't think your local farmer's market has the capacity to make a million lbs of ham.
There is a synergy of being able to get large amounts at a time - saves on time, logistics, transport etc.

How much do you think it would work out per lb if you hire 380,000 people to each get a 2lb thing of ham from their local Food Lion?

Not only that but the ham at FL is a lose leader item. I use to live in NC where there are a lot of FLs and they do this a lot.

I am sure Drudge and other right wing idiot sites would be up in arms if the Fed gov made a producer sell their product below cost. But instead they are up in arms for buying and not writing it up in such a way an idiot knows what is going on.

Given the blatant lack of sarcasm in the OP, this is an early contender for a self ownage nom.

Great the government buys ham at $1.50 per pound when they can get it for 79 cents per pound from a local grocery store.... and you don't have to ship it anywhere!

Food Lion Shank Portion Smoked Ham $.79/pound.

If you are going to get your news from drudge at least click on the link.

1. The link does not work.
2. That is what is called a lose leader item. There are limits and rules to get it and the quality is lower. I use to live in NC and shopped at FL so I know first hand. Let alone it is probable the uncooked one with bone. What the Gov got looks to be pre-cooked sliced and ready to eat. the stuff that can go from $4-8 a pound.
3. Thanks for the self ownage, can;t get enouhg from idiots like you and the OP.

Sorry the link works for me so I would go easy on who you call an idiot. And I assume smoked ham means that it is cooked. And if you are getting free ham, smoked shank portion is good enough. Hell we can add 10 cents a pound and give them butt portion.

My point is the government should just print coupons for people so they can go to their local grocery store. At least the stimulus money is then being used to actually put money into the local economy. Now on top of buying all this ham and cheese it has to be shipped all over the country... probably using UPS overnight.

Why don't the Democrats just give everyone who voted for them (indigent demographic) a coupon for a ham (myself, I'd like some mozzarella and process cheese with that ham sandwich!)? Instead of a chicken, like they used to?

Or $20 bills like they do in Chicago, Philly, etc.?

Butt portion is also available for $0.89 a lb., just $0.10 a lb. more! :D

You can ask your local deli counter to slice it (or the regular ham) for you and keep the butcher employed!

Since you and rudder decided to be intellectually dishonest I went and looked up pre-packaged sliced ham on www.safeway.com.
The least expensive brand was $2.99 a lb.
Now if you will both knock it off and quit acting like complete buffoons and maybe debate if spending tons of money on something going to a food bank is a good idea or not instead of being dipshits and debating the price of ham I might not call you both dumbasses in the future.

Smoked is NOT cooked. Like I said before it is uncooked special. What the Gov got was cooked and sliced, like the deli meat that goes for $4-8.

That and I guess we should just fly every person that would get this to TN since that is where the special is at. In wilmington NC where I looked at the FL ad it did not have this deal.

Apples =/= Orages.
