how much over invoice should you pay for a car..

Rallispec

I'm looking into buying a new car-- the invoice is $17,512, the MSRP is $19,186
the dealer was willing to go down as low as 18,100.. roughly 4% over invoice.

does this sound good? I'll also be getting abotu 600 dollars on my trade in.

thanks

Yeah that isn't bad. SOme people would say lower but if the dealer isn't willing to go any lower you can pick between going 4% over or not buying the car.

Invoice isn't even what the dealer paid for the car. The public invoice price is higher then what they actually paid nowadays. I'd hold out for 1 or 2% over invoice if you can.

Dont dealer get "cut-backs" from the car companies?

If you buy it at exactly invoice price...they still make money.

I would try to get it closer.

the car i'm looking at is a Silver Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V.. the dealership only has one in stock, and this is the only car within a 100 mile radius-- its in pretty high demand and i'm not sure if they'll be willing to go any lower.

The term "invoice" is useless.
I can almost guarantee you that it is not what the dealer paid for it. Even though that's what they want you to think.

If the car is in high demand, be prepared to spend a lot more than invoice (and even over MSRP in some cases like the S2000). Otherwise, it's not uncommon to get the car for invoice price or less.

Yep there is 2 invoices also, dealer and manufacturer, Plus they always get "Dealer Kickback"

if you're good enough...meaning a good bargainer...you could probably get the car for $200 above invoice...just keep haggling!

That looks like a decent price. Carsdirect will usually get you a price at or under invoice, but the Spec V apparently has enough of a demand that they're not even close, about $1000 over invoice for the base model
MSRP $17,539,
invoice $16,333,
price of $17,483

No matter what the dealer is going to make money off of you. And if your trade-in runs then you can get more than $600 for it through a private sale. Trade-ins are not the way to go in any deal.

<< is it worth the hassle of privately selling my car for the extra money i might get? >>

Yes it is! Last year I sold a 1997 Chevy S10 for 7500 dollars and the dealer was only going to give me around 3500 for it. The guy was pretty cool and told me too that it would be wiser if I sold it privately.

It depends on your vehicle. If it has 4 tires & runs then yes, it's probably worth it. Check nadaguides & kbb for resale value & take a look at ebay & autotrader to get an idea of what they're selling for. Both will probably show you more than $600. What's your vehicle?

But on trade-in's you get to deduct the value from the final price and save on the tax no? If that's right then you have to figure what you would have to sell it at privately to cover the tax savings.
