How much of our brain do we use?

Would someone mind explaining to me how this works? The theory about us using only a small percentage of our potential that is.

We only use such a small percentage because the machines are using the rest for their distributed computing projects.

I only use 10% of my mental capacity, which is a larger than one might think. My intellect is 10x greater than most of my fellow Homo sapien sapiens, for they chose the wrong pill.

Of course we use all of it... every part of the brain can be identified and it's function known. Take any chunk of it out, and you're going to have problems.

that "only using 10% of our brains" thing is a myth, we use different parts at different times, so in total we probably use all of it.

Yea, I always hear differently some people are like 7, some say 10, some say 15. I'm really not sure myself.

I don't know how much the rest of you use, but I always try to use as little as possible, it just makes things alot easier.

i think maybe they mean we use a small percentage of the potential "processing power".
I mean today we on average have a much higher knowledge base than someone of just 100 years ago, let alone 200-1000 years. We are bombarded with more and more sensory information therefore we remember more. We are also foced to think more and do more mental applications, where as before most human functions were physical. As time goes on we will use more and more of our potential and eventually unlock abilities we never had before, cept in some very rare persons.

I use 200% of my small brain to think. So how do I manage to do that, you ask? Well... When I need to think and don't have enough mental capacity for it (for example, when I was put in a position of a college teacher temporarily) I try to make up for my mental deficiencies by tricking people and playing the role of a clever person.

I didn't know we were sharing...In that case, I'm using 99%, and you're using just enough to post this inane blather.:D

Well from seeing brain scans it appears that most of it is actually very active as opposed to the myth that we only use a small fraction. Not all of it is used for thinking however, it's used for running our entire bodies which are very complex.

I think it might be that we just don't use our heads efficiently. For instance, did you know the human brain can process an entire page of text from a dictionary in 40 seconds....but since we are taught to read linearly, we go much much slower than what the brain is capable of.

actually, that's very difficult to determine b/c some people loose half their brains in special surgeries, acidents, etc. and still function just fine... It's almost impossible to make a connection between the mind and the brain other than the two being connected in someway or another. In other words, if you loose your brain you won't have a mind, or so it seems.
