How much of a difference is it between normal CDs and DVD-A or SACD's?

I know. 🙁

I was hoping somebody could do a quick summary. The "format" debate on digital music (especially when you lose anything) has been waged for over 2 decades now and I just don't keep up with it anymore.

SACD/DVD-A seemed to solve all of those with quality hi-resolution audio.

My CD's sound just fine to me. I've never heard SACD or DVD-A, but I'm thinking that I wouldn't really prefer one or the other. They would just sound "different." I'll hold judgement until I listen to some music in a blind A/B comparison using the same speakers and amplifier, but I'm not expecting much considering I don't believe vinyl to sound superior to a well mixed DDD CD recording.

Listen to the tone of horns and cymbals/snares and it will become strikingly clear.

There isn't that "sssszzzzzzssssszzzzz" sound.

I'd be willing to buy/rip huge digital files if the quality is DVD-A.

But as things stand, I'll stick with some fat LAMEs until something drastically better comes around.

you can rip dvd-As...it's a bit awkward, but doable.

that's how I listen to all my commercial dvd-As.

biggest difference I notice is that the higher res sounds slightly more "musical", if that makes any sense.

Can someone recommend an SACD or DVD-A classical recording and a DVD-A or SACD player? I've never heard it and I'd like to try it out. I doubt my DVD player supports the format but I'll have to look through the manual to see if it does.

I've heard good stuff about the Oppo 970 Universal Player on AVS forums. I'll probably end up buying it because right now I play my DVD-As on the computer linked to a receiver.

Anything under 160kps in the mp3 format is crap.

Sound fine on my Sennhesiers, Logitechs, and Daytons 🙂 What kind of uber speaker setup do you have?

Thanks FeuerFrei that looks like a good player at a good price.

I can tell the difference by using headphones.

they are better sure, but the drm + format war ruined them both. overpricing the players also didn't help universal adoption.
plus, people don't like being trapped into album playback, we want to rip and jukebox, and the drm just screwed that up big time. overprotectiveness by the industry killed higher quality audio🙁
