I just ordered new components. amd64 3200+, msi k8n ultra, 6600gt and 1gb ram.

my hard drive is a western digital 80gig 7200rpm with only 2mb. I got it before 8mb cache was cheap. How much of a damper will it put on my performance and what areas will it affect?

Hard drives are always a bottleneck.

A older 2mb will be even more of a bottleneck however. It will affect how fast you access info on your hard drive.

I understand that but in real world performance, will I actually see it and notice a difference? For example, what about gaming?

the hard drive shouldnt put too much of a damper on your system, especially with that card and proc

This drive wouldn't be too bad or expensive of an upgrade tho :D

Game first loads will be a bit slower but still decent. With 1GB of ram, games will run fine after the first load. Go for it. Let us know how it goes.
