Patricia Hill says she's written letters to Congressmen, Senators and even the Vice President.

Why skip the president? Oh that's right, he can't read.

Ditto.

By the way, I can't believe people actually think that the president is illiterate because of his issues with articulation. Watch Late Night a bit too much?

The problem isn't with illteracy... it's with the fact that you have to defend him from something so mundane as literacy. In other words, the president isn't especially bright. The highest mark you can give him on his intelligence is "Well, he's at least literate..."

And no, going to Yale does not make you smart. Everybody knows that. Yale sadly has a disproportionately large percentage of spoiled morons.

The family knew the father was going to call on the cell phone. How hard would it have been to tell the administration that it was going to happen, and because the soldiers have so little time on the phone, they need a little leeway on this issue?

Had the family done that, I believe the school would have accommodated them.

Copperas Cove is right outside Fort Hood. I would have thought the strong military presence in the area would change the administrators view on this case.

Raise your hand and say "Excuse me teach, my Dad, who is in the military in Iraq is calling and I'd really like to take this call. Would it be alright if I stepped out into the hallway and talked to him?"

Who would say no to that?

And this isn't a political issue. I'm a "liberal" cuckoo clock and even I can see that.

Exactly. If the kid was being an ass then it would be a problem. But assuming he did what every sane person would do -- get up and leave the class, then he shouldn't be suspended or in trouble at all.

The problem with zero tolerance is it makes it so teachers no longer have to think and use proper judgment.

I have a feeling that we're not getting the full story here. When I was in high school just over a year ago getting caught using a cell phone would warrant having it taken away, or getting a detention at worst. However, I'll tell you that a lot of kids get very mean and nasty and refuse to hand over the phone when the teacher tries to punish them. I'm willing to bet that this kid got belligerent and the school, who probably had it with cell phones, decided to make an example out of this kid and suspend him. This is just my guess though.

However, if the kid wasn't being disrespectful or anything, I don't see any justification for suspension. Yes, it's up to the school to decide on a punishment, but if the kid left the room and was being respectful, confiscating the phone or giving him an after-school detention was in order, but surely not a suspension. Like other members said though, I probably would have respectfully left the room and answered the phone and taken the punishment for it.

But I mean that, apart from the quality of his policies (which I shall not judge), serving as PotUS is not something that is "easy" to do. I know people hate the war, his financial, immigration, and education plans; but his job does require a bit of skill nonetheless and it's not something "any idiot" could do. Unless I'm way off here, his daily routine is not something that any illiterate person could handle with ease, and it does require working knowledge of law, economy, and other political fields. Now you could argue that is application of that knowledge is terrible, but that's another story.

I feel like people talk comedy hour a bit too seriously with all the Bush jokes and such. The attitude seems fueled more by a passionate hate for what he's done, rather than who he is. While I can't say I understand everything he's done or if I agree with it, I still think he deserves a little more credit than he's given.

I'm sure Baked knows that President Bush learned to read in the fourth grade, he was just being facetious.

Had it not been from his dad, he should have had the cellphone jerked from his hand and beaten with it until he promised to never bring a cellphone into a class room ever again.

I hate them with a passion.

Although its an assumption, but it sounds like this is the mothers fault.

I can't believe that if the mother had went to the teacher/admin of the school ahead of time, explained the situation, and had a relatively non-disruptive solution (the phone will be on vibrate, if it rings he will get up and walk out of class) that this would be an issue.

However, if the teacher had no prior knowledge of the call or situation then its real easy to see how this got out of hand to the point that the child was suspended and probably deserved it.

The level of Bush Derangement Syndrome on this board is unbelievable.

Its a matter of proportionality you idiots. Did the kid break the rules? Yes. Is the punishment consistent with the crime? No.

OP: Even in Texas liberal bias has infiltrated the educational system. Once that happens family values and support for the troops (or good old fashioned patriotism) is replaced by the 'blame America first' philosophy.

How do people like you make it through the day without spattering your brains across a wall? I really want to know. Are you like some kind of movie villain where pure hatred keeps you moving?

I have a tinfoil hat I'd like to sell you.

Wow, I respect you generally, but that's a pretty douchebag thing to say. The boy can't help it, his dad could be dead the next morning.

How would you like that? I think its a retarded rule, and it's not right, certainly in this situation.

The point is that many are so blinded by their views of the Iraq war that they can't add a modicum of prespective to their thoughts on this kid's actions.

Put yourself in this kids shoes. Your father is in Iraq fighting a war. He has a limited window to call and you may not hear from him ever again (literally). Your cell phone rings while you are in class. Do you take the call?

Now that we've settled that issue; what is more important for that kid's immediate well being? 10 minutes of class or 10 minutes of a phone conversation with the most important man in his life?

the kid was right to take the call. BUT it is against the rules and the kid deserved the punishment.

NO cell phones in class. they can' t make a exemption for one person and refuse anyone else.

right. the kid did the right thing (i sure would have taken the call) BUT so did the school. he broke the rules.

while a suspension may be harsh if thats the rules thats the rules. Cellphones should NOT be allowed in class.

my brother's in Iraq, if he called and I was on the phone with a customer I would tell the customer and take the call. I would also take a tongue lashing from my manager. I don't care. I am not sure if I would be disciplined or not but even if I was I would accept it and move on. Some things are more important than others.
