I see it not as a pet issue, but a life issue. He is part of my family and I would gladly spend any amount to make sure he has a pain free long and happy life. So in my opinion $600 is not a lot to spend for the health of your pet. I would even go so far as to say if my dog required a $50,000 treatment to survive, he would get it. But you also have to consider the age of the pet. If the pet is a year or two shy of his life expectancy, then of course things would be different. But if its mid-life or lower, then money isn't a object.
I find that appalling. It's a dog, A DOG!!!! You could have fed, sheltered, and sent a whole village in a 3rd world country to college for that. Disturbing...

Yeah, wtf! For that much he could have rescued many dogs from the local pound/rescue shelters and fed them, etc...that is just fvcked up.

There comes a point in an animals life where the owner has to be willing to let them go.

Really you need to think about the quality of life for your pet. If $600 could fix a cat or a dog that was young, and there would be no complications later on, I would spend it in a minute.

It also depends on if I had the money to spend.... Paying bills, rent, and buying food is more important for me (and a hypothetical family) is more important, and if I had to make the choice, I would go with keeping myself fed with a roof over my head.

P.S.- Our cat is not sick, and does not require this...yet

hopefully you won't get any sex for a month.

I grew up in a house where we spent a couple hundred dollars on a sick cat. The NEXT DAY, she ran in front of a car and died. My dad said "never again" would he spend money on an animal. A couple years later, another cat had kittens, and my dad drowned the litter. He did it when we weren't around, but we knew what happened. To this day, I am scarred by what he did to those poor innocent animals.

If I spent $1,500 on an AKC Bulldog I used to breed with, I'd spend up to $1,500 on it.

If I got a mutt for free, sadly I wouldn't spend over like $300 on it...

I have a siberian husky that I just spent over $1000 on. And I don't give a crap
if it could have fed some kids in a third world country...they aren't jumping up on
me when I walk in the door, and they don't give me ANY joy...like my doggies do.:D

Girlfriends Mini-Schnauzer 8 lb 8-months in we discovered she had a liver shunt.

$1800+ and 3 trips to Auburn University later, she is just peachy.

Great little dog, well worth the money spent.

i bought some pet insurance. its about $10-15 a month, but you won't have to pay vet fees again. it's actually saving me money and i don't have to worry about huge charges if my dog gets sick.

but i grew up on a farm where you shot your pets/dogs when they got sick and if the cat had kittens, you put them in a gunny sack with some rocks and found a pond somwhere to get rid of them

paying $ to a vet is reserved for farm animals, like cows

You are a horrible, horrible human being. If I ever saw anyone doing that to a living creature, especially cute ones, I'd tie some rocks to their legs and push their ass in. Why wouldn't you just SELL the kittens? Everyone loves kittens.

Oh, and BTW. My dad spent $3000 on Lester the Siamese ...his liver stopped working because he got too overweight, so we had to take him to the emergency animal hospital. My dad is usually the type of guy to be very stingy with money. But with his animals, there's no expense spared. Especially with Lester. He's the greatest cat EVAR. Smart little fvcker too.

My wife would say "HELL YES" to the $600 for the cat....... I'd say.......... "HELL NO". Get a replacement cat for free.

Then again, if I was in this situation, I'd be a hearless A-hole like you :) haha

$600 goes fast. Couple xrays, some rounds of tests, iv's, a few pills, etc... not even surgery.

Been there, done that.

I don't know what the upper limit is. I hope I never have to find out.
