How much money should be set aside for a motorcycle?

I don't need anything fancy at all, just something that'll provide me with basic transportation and good gas mileage. So for the total costs of a beginner's bike, insurance, safety equipment, lessons, etc..how much would it all come out to?

not sure... but on top of your motorcycle, you have to factor in insurance and all your gear... including a helmet, gloves, a jacket, etc... not cheap, but a lot cheaper than the moto itself.

I am actually thinking of getting a moped 😀

Cost $2000 Cdn new (1500 US) Around a $1000 Cdn used.

You get 120km per litre though (600km per 5 litre tank that's 375miles per 1.25 gallons 😀 or 300 miles to the gallon)

Granted.......... you can only go a max of 70 km/hr (44 mph)......... but with mopeds.......... you only need a Class 5 to drive one 😀

But to answer your question........... first figure out how much it will cost to get the bike, insure it, cost of classes & how fast you want to get it. Then figure out how much you can put aside from your paycheck everytime you get paid with out sacraficing your standard of living.

Cheers,
Aquaman

lol, no i didn't actually... hehehehehehehe... i did now... my bad.... i got to the part of good gas mileage....

ummm in that case, it all depends on what you want to be your "beginners bike"

some people like to start out w/ an r6 as their "beginners bike".... at least a friend of mine did... 😉 so it is all relative....

my case:

2 pc. suit - $315
Gloves - $60
Helmet - $160
Motorcycle - $2300

I spent less than $500 for an entire set of gear (minus boots), but don't think you will be so lucky. I'd save at least $800 for everything, and that's for a jacket only.

Also, if you're just starting out, there's no reason why you should spend over $1500 on your first bike. I fell in love with the bike I'm buying before I even saw one for sale, and when I found one for relatively cheap, I had to purchase it.

That, plus $50 for the motorcycle safety class ($25 is refundable, it differs by state), I'm looking at a total of about $2800 for a motorcycle. Add the cost of registration, license, and insurance, it'll probably be around the $3500 mark before it is completely legal.

What sorts of bikes goes for $1500?

My first bike was $1500 ('84 Honda VF700), MSF course was $50, jacket was about $200, helmet $200, gloves $40-ish, insurance was about $300 a year.

Look for a used crusier type bike like a older honda shadow, something 750cc or less. Try and get a V-Twin over a 2 or 4cyl inline.

My first bike I owned was a 86 Honda Shadow 700cc. I got it for $1000 (it sat for 2 years and I had to rebuild the carbs, replace the tires, battery, etc...). It as a good bike. Strong enough that aftre I got good at it, it was still fun.

Try and look for a bike that has a V-Twin (750cc or less) and a driveshaft (low maintaince)

My bike has been since totalled and after I settle I want to get a Harley Nighttrain.

My case was

160 Helmet
105 Jacket
60 boots
45 gloves
150 MSF course

So basically 5-600 bucks to get started, and however much your bike will cost

For me (bought a 2003 250cc Ninja last month)

$4200 total for the bike, helmet, gloves, and jacket. Boots I bought in Wal Mart a few years ago for $20 or $30, MSF class was $150.

Insurance on the bike is $180 a year for full coverage.

Get the Ninja. You'll love it. One of the (if not the) best starter bikes out there and actually a good bike for anyone looking to just putz around and not go 150mph on the highway.

yes you need insurance.. its the law.. (atleast in CA).

My insurance company does have medical payments but i didnt take that option.. my full coverage on my 2001 Suzuki GS500 is about 400 / yr

since your in CA.. if your under 21 you got to take the MSF course.. if your over its a tad bit more expensive but you should take it.

helmet can be got between 100-150 - look for SNELL M2000 rating and DOT rating on them. I have an HJC CS12 and a KBC TK-7
Gloves can be like 30-40 bucks.. I got an Olympia Winterx and a JoeRocket Speed<something> gloves
Jacket - about 100... I got clearance jackets - AlpineStars Textile and a Firstgear REV-X jacket.
Boots - well it depends, I have two boots.. but a regular over the ankle boot should work. I got a Tecnic Freeway boot and a KIT SteelToe boot (i dont suggest steel toe unless you know you dont crash, cause steel toe can dig into your leg in a crash.

I have a 2 peice rainsuit, a fieldsheer cobra one, and i use the overpant to keep me warm on colder days.. Usually I wear jeans, but someday when i make some money i will geta proper riding pants.

When I toko the MSF enrollment was $200 since i just turned 21... and people under only had to pay $75... WTF. Then I found out a couple of months ago that they jacked up the under 21 people to $150... 😛
