Its not really your FPS but how smooth you gameplay is. With 512mb of ram sometimes you have to go to the page file and that creates studdering but with 1gb you basically have perfectly smooth gameplay. And with 1gb the load times are greatly reduced.

Get the 1 GB! Trust me, you'll regret not getting if you don't. My bro just bought a X800XT, on a Athlon XP 3000+ system. He only had 512 megs RAM (PC3200 2x256), and even with that new video card, his gaming would lag. The frames would run high, but the memory couldn't handle the extra weight needed to run (1280*1024) smoothly. I think we might have even tried 1024*768 too, don't really remember. Anyway, we took my 1 GB of matched sticks from my system (PC3200), put in his, and it ran Excellent. I've got pretty much same sytem as his, with extra RAM and a smaller video card (ATI 9800XT), and my system plays much smoother than his, even though my frames aren't as high. We just ordered him 2 sticks of 512 MB, so monday his system will kill mine, but until then, I'm on top :p

I cannot believe how many are saying 512 is fine for gaming.
Sure, they will play, but you do you like having a half-assed gaming experienced or an enjoyable gaming experience?
It's common sense.
