how much memory?

I was reading on toms hardware, and he says that you should have at least 1gig of memory to make your computer run fast. In the past, I've heard that more memory makes the computer run faster, but I believe this is only in some cases. In my opinion, the computer will only run faster from adding more memory if it means less HD caching of stuff thats supposed to be in memory. I recently upgraded from 512mb to 768, and I didn't see any improvement at all... I think it's because of the way I use my computer. If I go to task manager and check my memory usage, it's rarely above 200mb. I don't see how more memory will make a computer go faster if the computer isn't even using all the memory it has available to it.

The computer specs are not as important as what do you use it for ? That is probably why you didn't notice a difference in speed.

it's just an average PC:

Athlon XP 1600+ (o/c to 140 FSB)
ECS kt266 mobo (cant remember the model)
DDR2100 CL2 memory (fastest timings)
GF3 ti450 (Gainward golden sample)
Windows XP
