How much memory will Windows (98se) hog?

Here's the deal. I ran with 256mb of ram for a long time, and if I had nothing open, system performance told me I had ~ 70% of memory free. I just loaded another 256mb stick (to bring the total to 512mb), and system performance still says I only have 70% free. Can anyone tell me why.

Also, why would windows only report that I have 511mb of ram installed?? Thanks!!

well 512 meg is a little too much for 98 to handle.

The reason for windows using 70% memory is: if you have that much memory, and no other program is using them, why not let windows use? the OS will free them if a new process is launched and such memory space is needed. This is supposely to be sophisticate memory management.

You must have an Intel 810 or 810E board (or something similar with the built-in graphics chipset from Intel), the 1MB will not show up because that is allocated for the graphics to use during bootup.

I had the same problem too. using MVP3 chipset wif 512 of RAM, and windows report that only 511 of RAM is available. try to start the computer without config.sys and autoexec.bat, and you will have the 512 meg of ram for windows ;)
