This has nothing to do with lots of icons, I've got 102 icons on my desktop.

Try this:
get tweakui, and install it.
then go into the control panel and open up tweakui, go to the IE tab, make sure that "allow active desktop to be turned on/off" is checked, so that you can disable it. While you're in there, uncheck shell enhancements. This should help somewhat as well.

Under the general tab, uncheck everything you think you can live without, that'll help reduce memory usage and speed things up some.

I can't for the life of me remember how I disabled active desktop though. sorry. :|

request. :) specify your operating system when you list numbers. and if it's w2k say if you have sp1 installed. I'm guessing mosdef you have w2k and this is a w2k question?

In win2k open a Local explorer window and go to Tools/Folder Options. Then click the View tab and scroll down until you see an option called "Launch Folder Windows in a Seperate Process". Enable it and see if this helps break up the memory usage at all. Other than that I am not sure why IE and Explorer combined into 1 process, very strange problem. I am still using IE 5.0 so maybe that is why I havn't run into this yet.

about the "convert jpgs to bmps to use as your background", i recommend getting irfanview. It's free and can be downloaded at download.com. it's an imageviewer that has the option of "set as background" so you can set whatever image you want and it converts it into a bmp and saves it in your windows directory as irfanview.bmp. i love this program. FASTEST imageviewer i've ever seen and supports practically EVERY damn format available. even plays avi's and mp3's.

mine is not checked and my memory usage is low. I don't think that sperates iexplore and explore. It says "launch FOLDER windows in a seperate process" which i take as meaning each folder you open, lets say while looking through my documents, will be a seperate process.

i could be wrong though

dwell, could you tell us how you disabled activedesktop? I remember disabling it on my pc, but I don't remember how I did it.

I can get a screenshot of my desktop when I go home, I'm working at the computer lab right now :)

The launch each folder in a seperate process is irrelevant for web browsing, I didn't have that checked and my explorer.exe usage was already low. I'm running Win2k SP1.

dieselstation:

Thanks for that, I did give that a try and it didnt work as Davegod said.

Do you guys mind posting the exact version number of IE and Win2000 that you are running. This might just affect a certain 'build' or mix of 'builds'. I just found something weird.
Win2000 Pro: SP1
If I go into IE and then Help/About IE it gives me this version
IE: 5.00.3103.1000 <- I suppose this is IE5 SP1

HOWEVER, what is weird is this.

I go into Program Files/Internet Explorer/Iexplore.exe
and right click, properties, then version
I get 5.00.2920.0000

And when I go into Winnt/explore.exe
check the version
i get
5.00.3103.1000

this basically means I am not even running the Iexplore.exe in the Program files, when I click on it, it somehow got forwarded into Winnt/explorer.exe and run that.

very weird

I should have mentioned that I have SP1. I mentioned in the title that I am using Win2k, but I guess I should have mentioned this in the body too.

My 2000 A.S. has been up since November and explorer is only using 3,500K. I use it as a mIRC client and a dedicated UT server.

Explorer seems to have a memory leak in it when I look at alot of files ( about 80K files ) in one directory and then shut down explorer. I've seen it get as high as 43Meg before I killed it off.
