Hah. Well, it is the first bill, I'm bein a bitch about this one but no reason to kick him out over a little lateness. Of course if he hasn't paid by the time the next bill comes in things will start happenin real quick :D

You gotta set this shit straight from the get go. If you start being lenient now he'll just walk all over you

How is this lenient? I'm not accepting late payment. Lenient is "yeah sure I'll take a couple weeks late." Not lenient is "Give me the fucking money." I went with "Give me the fucking money"

Relax....you do have to live with this guy. I'd give him a pass this once over the $50 water bill. Better than your living arrangements being hell for the rest of the year. If he continues to do this, yea, that's one thing, but lets not go overboard here.

Typical ATOT responses. No one else on ATOT actually has to live with the guy.

Being firm and not kicking the guy out immediately is NOT the same as being a pussy. Yeesh.

Hahaha can't come up with $50. Shit, I was a lazy bastard in college but I held a 35-hour-a-week job and actually paid my bills. Holy cow, is this boarding school for 11 year olds in Sweden? Is your roommate sitting there huffing the bong with his $60 quarter ounce bag of dirtweed but can't afford the water bill? Douche x10.

Either give me the money 4 days before the bill is due or I start charging credit card interest rate.

I'm not sure how you think you're going to be able to enforce that.

Sucks, I'd say let him be late and split the rest with the other roomate...obviously he needs to pay you both back, and have enough for next month. If it happens again, then threaten to have him removed and get a new roommate.

Hahaha. :D Everytime one of these type of threads come up there's always tons of calls for kicking the person out immediately. "HE DIDN'T PAY RIGHT EXACTLY ON TIME?!? THROW HIS SHIT OUT AND CALL THE COPS, CHANGE THE LOCKS, AND NEVER TALK TO HIM AGAIN".

It's the first time it's happened; Deeko and AstroManLuca pretty much said it.

I think more people need to read up on the eviction process before they choose room mates.
It would be nice if you could just kick someone out when they don't pay you what they owe, but the law doesn't see it that way.
Most states it takes over a month to get someone out, during which time they can stay there and use all the electric/water/ etc they want.
That is why I tell anyone who plans to have room mates to get everything in writing, your word of mouth means nothing.

And don't fall into the trap of "we are all friends, lets rent a place together", almost never works out and leads to ex-friends.

So my utility bills came in about 2 weeks ago for me and my 2 roommates. We agreed to split. The electric and water bills come in my name. The cable comes in roommate one's name. Roommate 2 was supposed to have water bill in his name but the apartment staff screwed that up.

Payment is due sept 28th. I tell them this as soon as I receive the bills. Roommate one gives me the money about 3 days later. Roommate two says he'll get it. Week later, I tell him I need that money, asap. He says ok, I'll get it out of the ATM this week. Yesterday, he tells me he doesn't have much money in his checking account, and he can't pay me for a couple weeks, sorry, etc.

My question is how much of a hard ass should I be? The way I'm looking at it, he lied/procrastinated the first time, lied/procrastinated the second, so I'm not going to cut any slack. Either give me the money 4 days before the bill is due or I start charging credit card interest rate.

FYI, his part of the bill is less than 50$. Thanks for opinions.

toss the bum out! next it'll be he cant pay rent.

toss him out now and find someone less flakey. and that'll give a msg to your spastic roommate #2 that gave u $ 3days late

Your roommate just set the tone for your relationship. You will constantly have to hassle him for money and it will end up you two not being friends.
Never, ever, ever, have a roommate. And when you get married, make your wife show you a credit report before you let her move in.

I'd like to point out that I handled all the bills for my apartment in college, and one of my roommates of 4 years was late from time to time. He's also one of my best friends. Assuming I had the money to cover it, it was never a problem - and he was always good for it. Yea, I prodded him about it, but I wasn't an asshole like everyone here is suggesting.

Granted, I was fortunate that he WAS always good for it - were that not the case, or were I not able to cover for it, it would have been a different story. All I'm saying is that it makes things a lot easier if you're actually friends with your roommates in college, so you don't always have to use being a dick as a first resort.
