we've used a combination of Central Air and just our master bedroom wall unit and our bill went from $80 to $120.

The heck with that. I'm more concerned about this winter. With Natural gas prices having tripled. I'm expecting my utility bill to exceed my rent. :(

Dave

I placed a thermostatically controlled fan in the attic and my bill dropped a good amount. 26 CF lightbulbs also help! :)

SAME! Also I can reccomend the "blow in" insulation crap - its dusty as all hell to install but with a blower it worked fine. I actually didnt rent the one from lowes, I used an old leaf blower/vac and broke up the bricks of insulation, then sucked it up with the blower, gave it a real nice coat of an extra 4 " everywhere upstairs helped a TON this summer!

My bill's are usually around 120-140 with AC set to 75 in the summer. I"d like it cooler but the roomates would complain. Oh yeah, 4 people (6 computers) and lots of HT stuff being used a lot. 2200sq.ft. house.

Side note - I thought turning the AC up and down would cost you a lot of money? Does it really save to turn it up to 80 during the day when nobody is home and then back down to 72 when you get home? Isn't the cost of running it for hours to get it down to 72 going to negate the savings of having it set to 80?

No. Not at all.

For some heat pumps, that can be true while heating. But otherwise, it is cheaper to ramp.

a hot month, it hits about $250-$275
august was very rainy so it was only $150

we have a ground source heat pump, so it isn't too bad considering the size of the house
our insulation must be pretty good too

Most months about $70, during the summer it peaks around $110 during the warm months, $90 during the okay months. No AC units, but a buttload of fans.

About $120 split 4-ways. Old, crappy college house, lots of stuff on, but AC... ahhaha at least that's one thing that is a waste around here and not jacking up the bill some more.

Under $40 a month for a two bedroom apartment. I turn the AC all the way down when I leave for work. Doesn't take long for it to cool down when I get home.

my apartment in Silicon Valley usually ran me about $35-$40 in the heat of summer or the cold of winter. Spring and fall were lower.

My current apartment does not have A/C, or need it (I live on the coast and it rarely tops 75 degrees).

$50 in winter $90 in summer. Gas bill runs as low as $15 in summer, $200 or more in winter.

2400 sq ft house including basement, 2 zones, programmable thermostat
