How much is Unreal 3 going to blow me away?

Okay so my first PC shooter was HL. I was amazed because I had never seen anything like it.

After that nothing really impressed me for years. Things got marginally better all the time, but no wow-ers.

Then I got the D3 alpha when it was leaked like a year before it was released. That wowed me. By the time the game came out it wasn't so amazing.

Then HL2 came along, looked excellent but nothing that made my jaw drop. Same for FC.

So will U3 fall along that same line? By the time it comes out it will look excellent but not enough to drop my mouth open? Or will it completely shatter everything.

Hard to say really. Doom III looked good but thats about it and HL2 looked good and was good. I think Far Cry wowed me more because it was the first game released of the 3 and IMO was the next level in graphics at the time. Far Cry(graphics wise) stole the thunder from Doom III and HL2. If you have the hardware to run it I think it will be the next big thing graphical. Thats if something doesn't come along first thats comparable like Far Cry did. Cause once something comes along with the next level of graphics anything else released that same year or two just looks good and thats it.

BTW the leak of Doom III was killer but at the time I only had a 8500 Radeon which didn't run it well.

I think it's definately DX but they may also (going by history) include an OGL render as well.

Unreal 3 doesn't excite me so much as the games that will be based on its engine that will undoubtable follow it. :)

"Will Unreal 3 blow me away?"

Short Answer: No.
Long Answer: Yes.

"How much is Unreal 3 going to blow me away?"

Depends on the hype, the actual product and your PC I guess.

We'll know pretty soon. the first U3 game is due this year . . .

. . . and Unreal Engine is a 'work in progress' . . . compare Unreal II the game with Thief DS also using the Unreal II engine . . . the difference IS jaw-dropping.

same thing with Unreal 3 engine. . . by the time Unreal 4 is out, we should have near- FF:Spirits Within gfx quality games and physics.

The important thing to remember when wondering if you'll have the hardware to run these things is that developers aren't stupid, and know what hardware is out, and what hardware most people have. I remember way before D3 came out, I was so concerned that it would run like crap on my system and I wouldn't be able to see all the eye candy. By the time the damn thing came out, MOST of us were able to run it no problem. My 9800 Pro handled it piece of cake.

I imagine U3E-based games will be the same. I anticipate to have my A64 3200+/1 gig mem/X800 XL 256 until at least NEXT fall, and although now I wonder if that will be enough, I am sure by the time the games ship, I'll realize it's still plenty, and waiting until then to upgrade shouldn't be a problem.

Don't compare your system to the top, compare your system to the masses. That's a better indication of how well your system will probably perform.

With that said, the screens I've seen looks amazing, but things will get dumbed down, and other titles seem to always beat the title that's announcing stuff.

FEAR is coming out soon but really isn't too much of a leap in graphics. What will be the next game to show a significant improvement, and how much of an improvement are we guessing?

Unreal 3 isnt a game, its an engine to make games

Will UT2007 wow you? graphically, yes. Oh, and it is DirectX (looks best with Shader model 3, trust me).

So, assuming you have a computer that runs it, graphically, it should wow you.

Or you're weird.

The 6600 will be the MINIMUM card to run the Unreal3 engine games . . . "DX9 only" . . .

What I'm wondering is whether it will REQUIRE dual core, a ppu, and a foliage processor to wow me. The screenshots that came out a few months back displaying the abilities of the foliage engine simply blew me away but I really don't want to spend money to play games beyond a decent video card.

What the hell is a foliage processor? You mean to tell me the normal CPU wouldn't handle that?

By the time a game comes using the U3 engine one will be able to get at least a slower dual core at a fair price IMO anyway.

I seen some sceenshots of Unreal 3 and they looked awesome....incedible detail. It is going to take a ton of power to run that game. I hope it runs alot better then Doom 3 ;)

And they can fit in current socket 939 mobos, correct? So the only thing forcing a mobo change for this game would be DDR2 memory...

Never attempt to get overly hyped by a game. Infact, you should expect not to blown away at all by U3, only then do you have a chance of being impressed when it arrives. I expect U3 to be good, I just don't expect it to be that much better than Doom3. That is the way these things always work. A scene with a big giant monster bursting through the wall doesn't really change my opinion.

Epic's single player games had been disappointing, such as Unreal and Unreal 2, but the Unreal Tournament series have been awesome. I've heard that Unreal 3 needs at least a 512MB videocard for all the eye candies.

Well, if FarCry didn't impressive you, I think you better hold off until 3D helmuts come out :)
