How much is too much?

Hi! I have a MSI K8N Platinum/SLI board and I was thinking of increasing my ram to either 2gb or 3gb (by this I mean adding another 1gb kit or adding a 2gb kit). Now I know that I don't need 3gb but the price is actually semi close (I save about 70 dollars buy getting the 2gb kit). My question is would this make a difference on my system or would it slow me down at all? Does this motherboard have problems running 1gb on a channel and then 2 gbs on another channel? Or the million dollar question, should I just leave the 1gb of ram and get another video card (I currently have 1 6800gt and could add another for the price of the 2gb kit).

Sorry, I guess this is more than one question.

Thanks for the help,

Justin

I would get new ram atm. The new games are demanding memory space, especially BF2 ..look at that fella..takes 1.4 gb of space to get all the eye candy. But overall, your vid card still have life for it, and just wait the other cards going down "in prices" in the later future. More ram space might save your system from headaches, and especially yours from page filing, and also..load times :Q

Thats exactly the game I've been playing (bf2) and my loading time is very annoying. Actually the game loading part is fast but then when it says loading complete verifying data takes FOREVER! Thanks for the advice!

So 1gb extra would be good or get 2gb? And will this mess with my timings...I have a 4400 X2 proc and the board specs are above thanks 🙂

If you get the same advertised ram then no, your timings shouldn't get messed up. I would say put the limit at a total of 2gb, as even that is still taking time to process in my mind; I still have 512 pc2100. Are you overclocking? You will be spending a lot of extra money buying xms over valueselect, and if your not overclocking, well, I hope putting xms in your sig is worth the difference. SLi is not going to increase your startup time afaik; the big BF2 booster, which it seems is what you really want, is a second gig of ram. By the time unreal07 comes out, if it needs 3gbs like bf2 "needs" 2, I'm going linux.

Thanks! I'll go with an extra gig of ram. The price difference for XMS and value was very little (like 20 bucks) so I went with xms. I'll keep going with it. I don't overclock but I do set the timings to what they are designed for which does help performance, albeit very little...5% here and there is good for me 🙂

Thanks,

Justin
