How much is good eyesight worth? !!UPDATE!!

Just found out my daughters eyesight may be irreparably damaged.

Went to another optometrist and he said her left eye has developed into lazy eye and it may to too late to correct. He said it was due to an incorrect prescription from another doctor. He will try to strengthen the bad eye by using a patch over the good one. We will know in about a month.

Her favorite thing to do is play baseball. She is only 6 but she is one of the most amazing kids I know. She has a classmate whose mom is barely 21. This particular kid has a club foot and has trouble walking. Yesterday she asked me for some candy. She had helped this boy walk on the balance beam at school and told him she would bring him some candy if he made it across. Many of her classmates tease this kid, but the character she displays at 6 years old is truly amazing.

The therapy has been working and my daughters eyesight is able to be corrected with glasses now. The new prescription strengthened her eye. I was so worried and now this is one less thing that has been weighing on my heart. She will still have glasses of course, but at least both eyes will be the same strength.

sue for a bazillion dollars!!

to me eyeseight is the most important of all senses.

but neo was blind and he is better when he's blind.. sooooo

Agreed that eyesight is the most important sense probably, though all are important (taste and smell are the least). Still, one bad eye plus one good she can still lead a perfectly useful life and other than a few things I doubt it would affect her too significantly. I imagine she'll compensate, especially at her young age.

I'd look into "punishing" that first doctor, although it won't make her eye any better and everybody makes mistakes...at the least I'd make him aware of it though so that he doesn't do it again.

Can't you give just a couple G's and get lasik or whatever? Or do you only have $20? 😉

Not everyone's eye problems are so simple.

Laser surgery won't do jack for me, the only way I'll ever have even relatively normal vision is through cornea transplants. Even then I'll probably end up needing contacts the rest of my life due to the difficulties in getting the transplanted tissue to heal into an optically friendly shape.

Good eyesight is worth everything to me. I don't have great eyes, but I don't have to wear glasses, yet. I work on a comptuer all day, but I routinely take breaks to rest my eyes.

How much is it worth? As much as you can sue the offending optometrist for. Seriously. If there was ever a time for a lawsuit, this is it.

You have no idea what I would pay (or what I would have my parents pay 🙂) for good eyesight. If my parents weren't so distrusting of technology, I would've gotten laser eye surgery many many moons ago. I grew up with glasses, and contacts are a PITA. Not to mention the amount of money/hassle you spend on glasses/contacts each year, I'd say it's worth thousands of dollars.

I hated it for her when she had to get the glasses last year. I could tell she was having trouble judging distances when she played baseball. Now I think of all the times I got after her to make sure she had her glasses on when reading books. Man I am pissed right now.

But there is a very small chance the new doctor can strengthen her eye enough. He thought it was already past the growing stage and that might be a problem but we will see in a few weeks.

They always say "it might be too late to correct the problem". He is just covering his ass. The eye patch will work.

I hope your right. Although this doctor doesn't have to cover his ass at all and has been a great help.

sounds like you're doing a great job raising your daughter. i truly hope that her eyesight will get better. take heart in the fact that no amount of technology or money can make people become good natured and kind. what your daughter may lack in eyesight, she more than makes up for in heart. g'luck!

back in 6th grade, I was told I needed glasses, but I hated the look so much I didn't bother. I was a pitcher in Little League at the time... one day someone hit a ball straight up the middle...

You like being color blind?😕

Before you go the route of courts... get a second opinion. The second Dr could be the one that gave the wrong diagnosis.

My left eye has nerve damage from birth and I have done everything the the eye dr's have suggested to no avail. As a child, I went to a total of 7 different Opt's and they all said something different to fix but most said the nerve damage is from birth not trauma. I am hesitant to say that a bad perscription caused nerve damage though. I think there might be another underlying issue that has cuased the damage.

You're aware that Lasik, etc doesn't guarantee 20/20 vision? The majority of patients have around 20/40, I believe (it's been a couple years since I researched and considered it). Also, a lot of people lose some of their night vision ability after the surgery (I don't know why). I find my night vision to be exceptional and don't want to lose it... plus with glasses, my vision is corrected to 20/15. Even if surgery corrected my vision to 20/40, I'd still want glasses to see as well as I do now.

Glad to hear it got better. 🙂

Definately tell the first Doc. Also tell whatever licensing board he answers to, and tell him/her you've done that too. Sue if you're into that kind of thing.
