How much is benching a pair of 65 lb. dumbbells equivalent to?

In terms of barbell benching? I'm too scared to do barbell benches because I don't want the weights to be stuck on me, whereas with dumbbells I can easily drop them.

Anyone care to venture a guess here?

PRobably closer to 155, I'd say.
 
It's really hard to say, as a lot of it will do with how your muscles groups are developed, since the barbell press and bench/bar press stress different ones...the barbell press has a lot more stabilizing to do, so if I were to venture a guess...I'd say...150ish, yeah, so something like what Elemental007 said.
 
If I can do say .. 4 reps of 135lbs, what do you guys figure my max is? I havent tried it in years...Just started working out again 🙁
 
Here's how you can tell for sure. Do as much as you can do with the dumbells, and then try maxing out your bench, keep the cuffs off since you don't have a spot. Anything less than 200 shouldn't crush you to the point you couldn't tilt the bar to drop the weight. This will give you "your" equivilent.

I'd say the dumbells have far more stabilizing. I can bench about 275. That doesn't mean I can dumbell press 135s, cuz that'd be insane.
 
Yeah, i would say dumbbells stabalize you better as well.

Anyways, i would agree with Elemental on the number 155... when i was benching with 65lbs dumbbells, i could only bench around 160 for reps. I prefer using a dumbbell though, but without a partner now, dumbbells are safer.

The barbell itself weighs what? 10-15lbs? Put light weight on it and then press. Start off light and work your way up.

When I used to work out when I was younger I used to warm up with 150lbs and then push myself to find the max I can press. I peeked at 250lbs. I could have went higher, but I ran out of weights. I figured I could have done 300 lbs.

The barbells (just the bars) at my gym weigh 45 lbs. Most olympic barbells weigh around that. Standard long bars are usually around 20 lbs.

you can do a lot of damage to your shoulders (& other things) if you lose control of the dumbbells.

if you're worried about the barbell, then get a spotter.

if you're worried about the barbell, then get a spotter.

You can dodamage doing any exercise if you lose control... with dumbbells, if you realize you can't do that extra set, you can just let it drop. Don't do this often though.. there's a saying at the gym i use to go to "if you can't put it down properly, don't pick it up."

That formula seems to be for entertainment value only. When I was younger and much more lean, I'd be able to do a weight 10 times, but my 1 rep max was only slightly higher than the weight I could do 10 times. And when I was getting fat, I could 1 rep max a lot, but I couldn't do many reps.

About 155-160.... there is a chart posted in the student gym.... I am currently doin sets of 135 and if I remember that chart correctly, 4x135 or so is about a 155-160 max
 
I can bench 155 10x. I just added dumbells to my workout a few weeks ago, I do 60, 65, and 70, 12, 10, and 8 times respectively. Everyone is different though.

That is pretty low, but maybe you have more slow twitch muscle?
