How much is a music CD worth to you?

Over the holidays I picked up the movies Die Hard (classic shooter) and Cast Away (Hanks fan here) for $5 each and it got me thinking. If I can get these movies for $5, how much is a music CD worth to me? After all making a movie can cost tens of millions of dollars, while a music CD must cost much less (anyone want to give an average cost of producing/promoting a music CD?). A music CD is only 50 - 70 minutes, where a movie is 90 - 150 minutes. A new movie costs $14 - $19, an old movie can be had for $10 - $15. New music runs $12 - $17 and old music always seems to be $15 - $17.
So I believe that the average music CD should cost about $7 and I should be able to get old music for $5.

For an illegal service that tricks people into thinking it is legal, they sure are pretty pricey.

You can't compare music to movies in that way... music obviously doesn't cost tens of millions of dollars to make, but it also doesn't get shown to a large audience willing to pay $8 a viewing all over the entire world when it comes out.

Plus, there's good music and bad music and good CD's and bad CD's. Many good ones are priceless in my book, and I've purchased several CD's multiple times cuz I keep losing them and they're just too damn good not to have. I've also spent a lot of money on bad CD's too, which aren't worth 10 cents to me anymore.

It is of questionable legality in the US. Simply because they happen to be within Russian copyright laws doesn't mean the same applies for the US.

The fact that it is over the internet makes it even more questionable.

Definitely. Considering how many people pirate their music, I feel terrible for good/talented up and coming bands.

Why? Those are the people I support. I pirate the rest. There are very few albums with $5 worth of good songs on them at the $.99 that the industry finds acceptable to charge per song. Why do I pirate when I can buy songs individually? Quality, format, rights............

The music industry probably thinks they are losing money with me too but I haven't and wouldn't buy CDs. I haven't bought an album since Dookie and before that it was Core. They simply do not produce enough quality content for me to justify spending my money.

right, movies have already had a box office run. Although I give the movie industry a lot of credit for keeping DVD prices down and keeping sales going. I know people buy DVD's that they won't watch more than 2 or 3 times, just because they seem to be a good value when you compare the MPAA's shiny disc to the RIAA's.

I'd also agree a good music album has a tremendous amount of replay value to me, there are albums I have listened to 100 times or more. There is no movie I can say that about.

I think they would have more success with new releases at $9-10, back catalog $6-7. I'm not holding my breath for that though 🙂

Woops, i guess i phrased it a little confusing. What i meant is that I feel bad when good/talented bands have to deal with "consumers" that:

1) pirate their music
2) are only willing to pay the lowest price for music. If it's not low enough for their standards, they most likely would resort to #1.
 
I have trouble finding albums to buy, so I wouldn't go crazy buying them if they were $5. I do think that $20 is a joke for most music out there.

Ask up and coming bands how they feel. Ever heard of Wilco? The released their cd for free onto the web and it is selling a surprising number of copies. P2p is a great way for unknown bands to get their music out, and yes in turn people (like me) do buy their stuff. Would I without p2p? Hell no, because I would have no clue who they were. The vast majority of bands out there do not have the luxury of being played on Clear Channel or MTV. Too bad the RIAA is the one with the power though.
 
i'd buy more CD's if they were around $8, but for $14, i'd rather have a DVD. maybe that's why i have so many dvd's 🙂
