How much HD space can you account for?

back in the day when an 80 mb hd was a large HD, i knew each and every file and folder on my HD. i knew why they were there and when i should / would delete them if necessary.

i was very aware of file management and took great pains to maintain a lot of free space.

now when 200 gb HD, i personally have about 350gb of HD space on the PC in question, i'm not nearly as good with my file management. i probably have lots of duplicates of certain files i downloaded, etc.

anyone see this trend? or is it just the excessively lazy like me that has gotten in this trap?

It's not just you. I don't know what's taking up all the space on my 80gb drives...

My solution? Buy a bigger hard drive (soon)! :D

I have a pretty good idea whats taking up space, what files are duplicated, etc ....
though I could probably easily wipe out 200 to 300 GB of useless crap if I wanted to.

I find it more rewarding to just buy more hard drives then to delete things. It saves me time, and I can continue to be an internet packrat.

I'm pretty good at keeping track of what is where. I have a lot of intentional duplicates. All my MP3s and User Files are synced nightly so they are duplicated.

I have 5 partitions and I'm a neat freak and do a lot of moving around. So I'm pretty sure what's where and how much.

BTW get Treesize ... it will tell you what's where and what's taking up the most space.

I got only one partition and know all my stuff. I know that most of my drive is occupied by movies. I save them on DVDs frequently and always have more than 80% of the drive free, and it's only 80GB at the moment.

I've only got 190 gigs, but I've filled it about 150-155 gigs even after reformatting 2 weeks ago.

My friend came up with a great idea, that rather than buy an external HDD, buy a bunch of DVD+Rs. And I furthered that by saying every month or so I'd make a DVD or two of what I've downloaded and put it on the DVD then delete it, and make a master list of what is on each DVD. Problem is, I found the 14-DVD tutorial on After Effects and I couldn't pass it up, so now I've gotta go out and buy a new spindle because I only have 8 DVDs left.

i use HD Scanner... gives you a nice pie chart so you can see whats taking the majority of the space

My HDs on my main computer are about 60% full (120 and an 80) but my second computer is practically empty. It has an 80 and a 40, and the 40 doesn't even have 100mb used on it, and the 80 only has 15gb used.

I don't know half of what is taking up space on my main drive. Most of it is probably game footprints and a couple ripped DVDs. The second HDD is pr0n and music.

I normally keep fairly good track of my data. I've got a 160gb HD, but I just noticed that only 127gb are available for use. Where did the other 33gb go??

Two drives, 320Gb total, and I know where it all is.

I also use CD Bank Cataloguer, which makes it extremely simple to keep track of what has been archived onto which disc.

2 separate systems:

<C: 105.36GB out of 114.46GB > <D: 33.2GB out of 152.55GB > <E: 293.03GB out of 312.66GB > <F: 13.29GB out of 19.07GB > <H: 0GB out of 0.83GB > <I have 444.88GB free out of 599.57GB available>
<C: 46.02GB out of 141.81GB > <H: 28.48GB out of 738.56GB > <P: 53.38GB out of 1908.97GB > <Q: 41.41GB out of 2031.45GB > <R: 40.13GB out of 1951.78GB > <S: 15.81GB out of 100.84GB > <I have 225.23GB free out of 6873.41GB available>

I know what ~95% of the data is (and there's roughly another TB or 2 running around that I just don't feel like showing atm). :)

Go to Disk Management, make a 33gb partition. Windows doesn't support big hard drives.

I have a 120GB space drive and I can tell you everything that's on it and where it's at.

To be fair, it's mostly media storage so... not that hard. It's also down to its last gigabyte :(.

I had a 160gb desktop HD. I let lots of downloads accumulate.

Now I'm on a laptop with a 40gb hard drive. I manage a lot better and burn lots of stuff.
