I normally keep fairly good track of my data. I've got a 160gb HD, but I just noticed that only 127gb are available for use. Where did the other 33gb go??

U make funnay?

no :(

Go to Disk Management, make a 33gb partition. Windows doesn't support big hard drives.

Windows does support big hard drives with NTFS; my friend is using a 250gb HD.

Edit: and where's disk management? (I'm on XP)

Black Friday - November 25, 2005 :D

13.8GB left on my 20GB OS partition

100GB left on my 213GB Data partition (this is all because of BT and Goosemaster's HD clips :p)

Next time I see an awesome deal on a big hard drive (UATA 100, those are cheap), I'll archive all my data on it and keep it as a backup

I'm a backup freak

I'm pretty good at file management, but with all my backups before formatting, things havee gotten moved around here and there

After my AP test tomorrow, file managing is one of the things I plan to do

I try and clean certain file folders every now and then to free up space but when you have 200 gigs of local storage (a bit over 100 gigs free) and over 200 gigs available on network storage it can be hard to really focus on it that much since you do have so much space available.

Install SP1 if your using windows XP or SP4 if using windows 2000 and then enable 48bit LBA with the maxblast utility from the maxtor website (also be sure your mobo supports 48bit LBA).

Like many people here I have a relatively small drive for OS and programs.
And one bigass drive for junk.
Mine is a PATA 300GB Hitachi.
I keep smut and ISO's on it.

Yes it does... It doesn't support it because of the fact that MS didn't implement 48bit LBA.. You have to enable it later..

I'm still pretty neat about things with a pair of 120gb drives (no raid) in my main rig. Keeping a specific folder for downloads probably helps; I periodically go through it and decide what to hold onto and put it wherever it goes depending what it is, or delete it. My music collection is mirrored so I don't have to re-rip everything in the case of a hard drive failure.

i lost some personal photos the other day and searched frantically over 6 harddrives. my HD is overdue for cleaning and backup. Im tempted to just get a new drive and fill it up with the junk.

I have 500GB :)
I have no problem keeping track of what's on it, since most of it is gathered up in one folder called.. p0.. :p

Hard drive organizing is just like house organizing.

You must purge then organize or then organizing won't do any good.

This thread reminded me I have to clean up some backup files.

I have a pretty good idea of whats in my drives (160gig total, another 160gig drive thats dead now), but I have to organize them a bit better. I have directory structures like rabbit holes that I have to organize.
