People who play win 100% more often than people who don't.

Funny ... but true. It is also true that those who play have a VERY low chance of winning anything. In my state the odds of winning the lottery are 1/13,000,000 ... or effectively 0.

$200 yesterday, I sold about $700 in winners at my store yesterday. People who play win 100% more often than people who don't.

Not true.
Not 100% of people who play win. There is something like a 1 in 30 chance of winning "anything at all" in power ball. So, if somebody buys one ticket every year, there is less than a 3% chance of winning anything each year. They may or may not ever win in their lifetime.

I understand most gamblers tend to be more compulsive and tend to prefer giving extra money to the government more often than once per year, so, the percentage of "players" who have never won is probbaly pretty small.

People who play the lottery lose more often than they win, and they lose more than they win. It's a zero sum game and a big chunk of the money gets pulled out of the system to fund various government programs. It's statically worse than even casino odds, which are pretty abysmal.

Lottery isn't really gambling compared to say casino gambling where there is strategy involved.

Lottery should be played responsibly with spare change or the extra dollar that was in your pants but outside of your wallet.

You shouldn't spend more on lottery tickets than what could be considered a sum that impacts your retirement outlook, but short of that, winning affects you enormously, and losing technically doesn't affect you at all.

~$50. I can't remember exact.

It is still one cheap form of entertainment. It is not about winning, it is about DREAMING of winning. What would you do. I am part of an office pool and once the lottery hits hundreds of millions the water cooler talk starts.

Do I think I will win? No. Do I still play? Sure.

I buy the ticket/s, then let it sit or 2-3 months before checking. All I want is the chance, this way I don't pay for it twice a week.

Most I've won is 11 bux. I'd guess I put in 10 a year. I've had dreams where I win the jackpot then in the dream realize I'm dreaming....

$39.50 + $10 and a bunch of $1 or $2

How much did I spend/lose/waste/gamble to achieve that level of stupidity?

Oh you look great, did you lose weight? ;)

Lottery/Scratch its - I believe about $10 once. but mostly it's $2...

As with others - I encountered the same "divine intervention" as well...

A long time ago the floppy drive on my Amiga 500 broke. The local repair man said it would cost about $165 to replace. Since I couldn't use my A500 that night [requirement to boot Workbench], I decided to take a drive and ended up stopping by the dog track - a place I've never been to before nor had any experience with how to place bets. I decided to throw caution to the wind and placed a bet on 3 dogs to finish in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Amazingly - the dogs did finish in that order and I won $180.00 - enough to pay for the replacement floppy drive and gas/food for the night.

not 100% more, infinitely more. They still lose most of the time, though.

You do have a slightly better chance of winning if you buy a ticket than if you don't...

£9500(ish) on a Euromillions
£200 on a national lottery
£50 on a scratch card

I have only been doing the lottery for 2 years though, and the money has been pilled into paying off my mortgage

It is impossible to play it responsibly by virtue of what it is. Your final statement belies the statistics behind it. Winning affects enormously but winning any significant amount is so unlikely that it's effectively a 0% chance. It defies reason to even consider it beyond some fantasy "what would you do"-type scenario. It will just never happen for all intents and purposes. Contrast if you're spending $10, $20/ week it's nothing you'll notice after a month but after a few years it becomes a meaningful amount of money.
