How much Hard Drive Space do you need?!!

How big are most of your hard drives and how much have you used is what i'm wondering.

How much do YOU think most people today need. 15? 20? 30? 60 over doing it?

*Most* people as in general public or people that are "experienced users"?
Cuz the gen. public needs at most 20-30 gig
Experienced users need as much as they can afford..
😀

Oh yeah, I'm experienced and have a 30GB Maxtor and a 6GB Seagate (MP3 drive, and its FULL)
I need more $$ so I can get another 30GB and RAID them

I need about 40Gigs to hold all my stuff, I also like having two separate hard drives so when one craps out I still have the other.

2x 60gig maxtors, 2x 9.1 10k enterprise WD in raid, 40gig maxtor, 20gb quantum, 2x 10gb maxtors, random lesser maxtors and other brands, 1 bigfoot in the closet.

They still get full

oh yea 14h storage in the tivo, 20h tivo on backorder (hope 80gigs come down in price to add to the 20h tivo)

i think the general public can get away with 20/25GB.

hell, i even get away with that. they only reason i need another HD is in case one craps out.

I have never filled more than 8 GB on my 13 GB HD (WD 5400 RPM/ATA 33).

But then I have about 100 CD-Rs and CRDW's for archives, etc.

Of course, I wanted to experience better performance so I just bought a new 30GB Maxtor (ATA 66/7200 RPM) and may use my old HD as a back-up.

What are the benefits of RAID? Other than backing up? I hear a lot of disagreement as to actual real world performance. Some say it's just for benchmarks and bragging rights.

What do you think?

I have a 30 gig 7200 rpm IBM that isnt even half filled up yet, but thats because I have most stuff backed up on CD's.

I have two IBM 75GXPs a 30.7Gig and 46.1Gig

I have:

4Gig Windows partiton...pretty empty just windows pretty much nothing else
8Gig Apps...about half full I guess
391MB Virtual Memory...384MB permanent swap file, so it's pretty full 😉
4x14Gig F: is pretty well full of games, H: is all my downloads and files and crap...maybe 3gig...I: is my MP3s..probably 10Gig...G: is completely naked....

So that's about 33Gig of 68Gig total..or somewhere in that neighbourhood...(yes I know 45+30=75 not 68..I have linux on here to which I never use and didn't bother to count)

Two 30.0 IBM 75GXP + 1 9 IBM DNES + 1 8.4 Western Digital Cavair = 77.4 GB of space with about 35 used

schola

Maxtor 80gb 5400rpm
Maxtor 45gb 7200rpm

I have 50 gigs left... should be filled by the end of this semester though... =)

Only reason I have several different HDD's is the multiple OS's I run and experiment (learn) with. I have 3 WD 15.3GB and one Quantum 10.2GB and one Quantum 6.4GB. I don't see how anyone could hold 80GB of stuff unless they are a serious pack rat.

i have 40gb and it's full
I have ton's of burn cdr
planning to add 60gb to my current setup
as for HD space, as much as you can afford

Depends on your internet connection,

For broadband, probably anywhere from 40-60 gigs
For dialup, 30 gigs should suffice unless you try REALLY hard like 24/7 downloading

I have a Maxtor 40 gig, an IBM 20 gig, and just purchased a Maxtor 80 gig.

You always need more than you think so if you think you only need 30 or 40 then buy a 60 gig.

I currently have an IBM 75GXP 46.1GB, an IBM 34GXP 20.5GB, an IBM 9ES 4.5GB Ultra Wide SCSI, and finally a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 40 20.4GB. I have about 18GB worth of data, MP3s, downloads, OS, games(these things take up massive space), and etc... With prices these days, it's getting easier to afford the larger drives. I guess you can never have enough space.

If your going to be using dsl/cable and you might want to at least go with 40, because your most likely gonna be downloading lots (movies, mp3, games, iso, etc...) i'm running on 40 gigs right now but I have the plextor 12x for the extra storage space used 100+cds for extra storage, so you might want more if your getting highspeed access

yea I agree, there is deffinatly a relationship between your needed HD space and the type of connection you have. 2 of my friends that switch to DSL had to go out and buy new 30 Gig drives because thier 20's where getting full. While I sit here with a 14 and have NO worries about space. I am kind of anal about unistalling games when I am done playing them though. I could easily fill 30-40 Gig if I wanted to install all my games

Wow you guys have some pretty big HD's. I was thinking of just getting a 30GB IBM one. Right now I have a 12GB Quantum that's really SLOW. I've only used like 5 GB though.
Well once I have enough money saved up...I'm off to build a new comp! Right now I have a cel 500/ 12GB HD/ 192MB Ram/ and a V3 2k.

Think a Duron 800/ KT133A board/ and a 30GB HD will last a year?

(still can't believe how you guys are able to fill 60GB HD's...I have adsl and i don't dled as much as some of you 🙂)

Well, I personally use a 4.3 seagate & a 13 g maxtor- neither one is anywhere near full! (of course, I'm still using a PII 266 on a 56 K)

However, I prefer to use at least a IBM 7200 20 gig for my builds
