Lard!It depends on the frosting... a buttercream without any lard and made with butter I like at least half an inch, more if its chocolat. If it's frosting made with that lard stuff (Crisco, Fluffo, etc.) , I want minimal because it's disgusting.
Nah. The "new" thing of cupcakes being trendy has lead to way too much buttercream icing being used because it looks nice. It's all about the proper ratio of frosting to cake. Frosting isn't a decoration, it's an accompaniment. I suspect most of the frosting haters are either eating the canned crap or, only eating frosting that matches the cake. White on white, chocolate on chocolate, boring on boring.

Me too. When I was a kid I'd eat the cake first then the frosting by itself. Same with fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt. Nowadays at my age I eat neither, or any sugar in my diet; I'm too afraid of the diabetes. As a kid I used to love it. But now I only like a small amount.
Bonus: Because we refer to it as icing, whenever I hear the word frosting I think of the scene in Zack and Miri Make a Porno in which the one guy says, "She frosted me like a cake!"
You have to have seen it.
I try to avoid cake completely, because I am a fat man, and cake makes the fat grow.
But, if I am going to eat cake, I want huge frosting. A big thick sloppy layer of buttercream.
Or, if it's carrot cake, a huge dollop of too much cream cheese frosting.
Ratio of 2:1 frosting to cake to 3:1 frosting to cake is preferred.
But again, I avoid cake most of the time since the frosting has a billion calories.
