I can't believe how expensive all these are compared to where I live. Although used, our house cost roughly 80,000, has a finished basement, 1st floor, 2nd floor, carport, front porch, back porch, 4 bedrooms, 1 bath, decent sized attic, and a pretty good sized front and back yard.

maybe you should move to a smaller town, Ross. ;)

Start calling your local small contruction contractors. You will eventually find someone who will sit you down and show you a whoooole freakin bunch of cheap house designs.

Just remember you get what you pay for. That's not saying 'kit' houses are worse than 'custom' houses, but be careful about who you hire as your contractor. Make sure he will do everything it takes to make you happy, ask to view some of his current houses. There are alot of bad contractors out there. ;)

A ranch home will be more expensive then any other type because they require a larger lot, since everything is on ground level. I don't like split level homes because you are always going up/down stairs. Why don't you see how much you can qualify for now and see if you can find anything you can afford. This way you are NOT throwing away your money on rent. I think you would be better off selling that hot deal accord and driving a beater and building equity than driving a nice car.
