I know someone who has a blank canvas that's stretched, on a frame, it's 6 feet by 5 feet, and gheesso'ed, (gesso, or ghesso?). He's asking $250 for it. Is that overpriced?

I might need this for my friend to paint on (see graffiti thread).

UPDATE: I offered the guy $150 for the canvas, and here is his response:

This is top of the line canvas - before preparation, raw, cost me over $250. i applied three coats of professional acrylic gesso. Over $50 in wood and two-day labor to build the frame. Worth easily in excess of $650. It's an amazing deal at the $250 i offered you, and I'll stand by it if you wish. Otherwise, I'll just have to make another great painting on it.

Is this BS?

Depends on the canvas and the frame. You can buy a 4'x5' with artist edges (1.5") at Michael's for $100, and they have 40-50% off one item coupons every Sunday.

Another option for something that large is that brown, pressed 4'x8' sheet of wood at any lumber yard for under $20. (It's like 1/4 inch thick.) The only problem is you need to build a frame for it and gesso it.

$250 sounds a bit high to me, and I buy canvases all the time.

It's high. You can buy top quality material and do it yourself for about half that or a little less. Plus you will have re-useable tools like a canvas stretcher, staple gun, and extra gesso.

But, it yo are lazy...

How much should I offer the guy for the canvas? I'm not gonna be painting any time soon so I don't need tools like the stretcher or gesso. Can I buy a canvas that size that's ready to paint on out-of-the-box, from an art store?

Just remembered the name of that wood, masonite. (some people call it fiber board I think)

You can buy pre-gessoed canvas but it comes in a rather large roll. Go to dickblick (yes, thats a website for art supplies) and look around, you will get an idea of prices.

I don't have time to go get it stretched and mounted on a frame. I need something that i can buy and paint on immediately.

I can't access dickblick, I wonder if my work firewall has blocked it due to the name...

Blick Canvas By the Roll 63" Wide - 6 Yards Primed $39.38

You can buy something like that, and then affix it to hardboard later. Or, buy that and some frames and make it yourself...it really doesn't take long.

How easy is that, i don't have the time or to experiment with this. I offered the guy I know $150 for the canvas he has. We'll see what he says.

I got a prestretched 3x4 at Pat Catans for like $35. I wish I could get anything bigger around here. Unfortunately the price looks like it shoots up once you go bigger than 3x4...

That guy is full of ******.
Top of the line canvas + enough gesso to cover 3 times + frame = ~$150 tops.

Two days to build it...that's why he does art and not cabinetry or construction.

Go to the local flea market and buy a painting that big for $50 and paint over it.

From what everyone else has said, its worth that much to him because he put it together. If you want to pay the extra $100 to not have to put it together then do it!

That's a little high IMO. My roommate gets large one around 6x5 (maybe a little smaller) and it's under $100, I know that much. Then again, he gets the student or low-end versions.
