Only you can decide how much speed you need, but out of the two choices....

Radeon 9100 for $110
MX-440 for $70

That $40 difference will ~double the performance! Too bad you missed out on the Staples clearance of the Retail Hercules 8500LE cards... they went out for $100 and you could apply a $10 instant rebate coupon to that! :D Only two weeks ago... maybe they still have one. ;)

In any case, I'd go for some kind of Radeon 8500/9100 (same card really) if you can get it for very close to the $100 Canadian mark.
Much better performance than the MX-440 and better quality/longevity to boot! :)

But either card wil kick the pants off your old TNT2! :D :light::music::sun:

If I remember correctly, the MX440 can keep pace with and beat a Radeon 9000. I doubt the Radeon 9000 has half the performance of a 9100.

That being said... the most intresting analogy i've found so far.. is..

TNT2->MX440=walking->Racing bicycle. Or maybe even low level car.

Check out all the 5200 reviews floating around now... they review the 9000 Pro vs. MX-440 vs. 5200 Pro.
The 9000 Pro smacks the MX-440 silly. No it's not ALWAYS double the performance, (which is why I used "~" = "about") but it IS significantly faster in almost every circumstance. An 8500/9100 is all the faster. There's just no comparing the two, especially since they both sell at about the same price point. (Unless you're getting a really, really cheap, low-clocked SDR MX-440 "SE". Not all SE's suck, but a LOT do, as do many low-clock Radeon 9000 NP's.)

WOW!!!! I'm not the only one, thank god!

I have a TNT2 Ultra right now....
I only have a 700 mhz amd t-bird though, so I want a low-end (but high-end compared to my tnt2 ultra)
im getting a new computer in september or so, but for now I wanna be able to play bf1942....
so, would the gf4mx440 be good enough for me? I cant see me getting much more of a gain by getting the geforce 4 ti4200 because of my cpu limitations

pls need advice on this topic and what to get that would maximize my 700 mhz potential but not go over the top(as the 4200 would)

I would imagine BF would be jolty as hell.

It is on mine, and im running a GF4MX440 & an AXP 1800+

Well the processor wouldn't be the only limiting factor here - the front side bus speed (probably 100MHz) is also a limit. A GF4 MX would probably work just fine; it might not give its full potential yield, but that'd be true of any component/motherboard pair that's not perfectly matched - one will bottleneck the other.
But the difference from a TNT2 to a Geforce-level card is amazing. I think I had an overclocked TNT2 M64 when I got a Geforce2 GTS 64MB ($320!). That was a really big difference. The hardware Transform&Lighting did wonders for some games, and antialiasing (though it did have a hefty performance hit on the GF2 architecture, plus the hardware just wasn't fast enough to do it well) was nice. I made a slight upgrade then to a Geforce2 Pro, which just had faster RAM. The next major upgrade was to a Geforce4 Ti4200 - another big increase. I finally switched to ATi, so now I've got a Radeon 9700 Pro. That's fast. :D:D

See, if I had money to waste I would buy a 9700 Pro. ;)

Anyhow... another related question that I shall stick in this thread is as follows. What would be the best combination of video card and LCD monitor? Does it matter, in any case? Would a GF4 or Radeon or whatever all be just as good for use with an LCD monitor? CAN you use either one with an LCD? Visual quality differences?

Also, what LCD monitor would you suggest for $900canadian that might be good/decent? I don't want aweful ghosting, I don't want movies to look like horse-ass, and I don't want it to be all black when looked at from an angle. On top of all these prerequisites, I don't want it to look butt-ugly either, on the exterior.

Any suggestions? And what video card would go well with that. By the time I finally do upgrade I'll probably upgrade the ram, video and monitor all at once (still running a 15" Optiquest @ 1280x960x32bppx72Hz). :p

Funny how you say you don't have money to waste, then you go and buy a $1000 giant flatscreen. ;)

I'd try and find a big, short-necked CRT monitor (unless you've got a really, really good reason for NEEDING LCD) and put $200-299 CDN into a video card you won't WANT to upgrade for a long time! A Radeon 9500 Pro or 9700 non-pro would be a very good investment.

If you still have only $100 to spend, try and find a clear-out deal on a Radeon 8500LE - you won't be sorry! :D

lol, I didn't waste $1k on anything, an LCD is just something I've wanted for some time, but I doubt I'll put money into that any time soon. It'd be nice though. Anyway thanks for all the replies, I will keep all of this in mind when I finally bite the bullet. :p
