How much faster is a GF4 MX440 compared to TNT2?

Just curious. The card is only like $40usd and i'm pretty sure it'd kick the crap out of my tnt2 right?

and another question my bro's GF2 MX440 died, so he replaced it with a cheap card.. thing is he got a GF2 MX400 for the same price as he could have gotten a GF4 MX440! :Q

He was satisfied with his GF2 MX440... and he thinks the MX400 sucks BALLS compared to it (he can't play GTA3 for crap anymore). Would the GF4 MX440 be a worthwhile purchase at such a low price for both of us?

Didn't THG do a huge review of 31 video cards? This might be on there, head on over to their video section.

GF4MX series are crap, but hey, if you can get it for under $50, its a decent card. Personnally I'd spend a lil more and get a higher performing 8500LE 64MB AGP @ newegg for $72 shipped. Only other card that can outperform is the TI4200 which is only marginally faster at stock speeds (10-15FPS more).

No they're not. The MX440 performs on par with a geforce 2 Ultra. Now, I GeForce 2 Ultra was the best card on the market when the TNT2 was being sold as the MX440 is now. It will be head and shoulders above the TNT, no doubt.
For futureproofing you might want to wait for the GeForce FX 5200 vanilla which is supposed to retail at $79 have a passive heatsink and be fully DX9 compliant.

I had a GF4MX440, and they're not crap. They're just not the best. They are DX 8.1 compliant, but as someone else said, wait till you can get a DX9 card - its worth it. I went from that card to a Radeon 9500PRO and didn't know what I was missing!!! Just wait dude....

Actually, the GF4mx series is NOT dx8 compliant. The gf4mx is basically a gf2 an steroids, two generations old, and a directx 7 part.

But, it sounds like it will be a big improvement for ya. I would go for the radeon8500 at newegg as somebody else suggested tho.

best of luck,

Shop around for a Ti4200... they're getting pretty cheap.....

Enormous gains above what you are considering!

edit: (I forgot to mention...... (anything MX => EVIL commit it to memory :D )

The GeForce4 MX 440 shares many of the same features as the GeForce4 Ti features. It does not have pixel and vertex shaders that would make it a DX 8 card. It's simply a faster version of the GeForce2 MX series. It would probably perform on par with a GeForce2 Ultra. The GeForce3 series cards are DX 8 cards. I'd go for a GeForce3 Ti 200 before a GeForce MX card.

The GF4 MX440 will kick the crap out of a TNT2 but as others have pointed out there are much better choices (Radeon 8500, GF3 Ti200 etc).

The GeForce4 MX 440 shares many of the same features as the GeForce4 Ti features.
No, it shares most of the features from the GF2 core.

For $75 I'd buy a Radeon 9100 with VGA/DVI (or 8500 if you can find one).

To answer your question yes. If you can find a cheap MX460 that would be even better. But go ahead and get the MX440 if you desire to.

Big (or any) difference between that and the 128MB? Any diff between the 9000 and 9100?

Yes I know, but as you can see (but probably haven't due to not reading the thread), this thread has progressed and is no longer discussing the TNT2/MX440, really.

The 64 has less memory. ;)

Whether this matters or not is debatable. You'll get differing opinions. I have never had the 9100 128 MB so I can't compare.

Also important though is that many 64 MB cards use FASTER memory than the 128 MB version. Thus if 64 MB is enough for your purposes then a 64 will actually often run faster than the 128 MB.

Both are significantly faster than the 9000. The 9100 is similar to the 8500LE.

Yeah yeah yeah, but my computer isn't very high up on the priority list right now. Getting a loan for a car, paying off my $800 visa bill and doing interesting things with my life are all much higher up on the list. Nevertheless, I do want to fix up a couple things on the comp sometimes, hence this thread.

So, the 9100 is similar to the 8500LE which is also superior to the 9000? All these numbers are st00pid. They should keep things simple like they used to be with video cards. TNT2. TNT2 Ultra. Banshee. Voodoo 2, Voodoo 3. SIMPLE! :p none of this 7000, 7500 8000 8500 8500LE 9000 9100 bullsh!t!:p Geforce this geforce that! blah!

Anyway... so the best bang for the buck would be a 64MB 9100 then? Any downsides? Drivers?
