how much faster is a 6600/GT then a AIW 9600 pro?

I play EQ2 alot and I noticed a real difference when i switched everything to max however at 1024x768 i do see slow downs w/ everything set to max. I'm wondering how much faster a $200 6600 or GT would would be compared to my current card.

A lot.

I just went from a 9600pro aiw, to a 6600gt (agp).

The only game I really play is Americas Army, and a little bit of HL2. Haven't played HL2 with the 6600gt yet, but Americas Army improved a lot.

Many people will tell you to go to a 6800, and they have a good arguement. The reason I went with the 6600gt, is that I was able to get another 512mb of ram with the 6600gt (to make 1 gig) for around the same price as a 6800. Also, in the last year I have had a 5900se and a 9800pro. Since the 6600gt performs better than both of those, I figured it would make a non-big gamer like me happy. I also felt that I would have to upgrade the rest of my system to justify the 6800 (2.6c@3.0, 1 gig ddr400).

In one year from now I plan to go to a socket 939 amd 64, and I figure the 6600gt with my current system will be fine for me until then.

Perhaps that helps?

Current Rig is:

Athlon Mobile 2500+ @ 2400Mhz
2GB PC2700
Asus A7880
ATI AIW 9600 Pro
120GB HDD

I was doing a little bit of reading and so far i'm leaning to the XFX 6600GT as it has dual vga and the only reason I have the AIW is because it too has dual VGA (using 2 NEC 991SB monitors).

Edit: I also see they have 6600 non gt's w/ 256MB of memory for $150. How much faster is a GT vs a non GT?

IMO, the 6600GT 128MB would be better than the vanilla 6600 256MB.

As for dual VGA-out, I wouldn't worry too much about that. I have a BFG 6800 OC with DVI and VGA out, but am using a DVI to VGA adapter (included with card) for my dual CRT setup. Get the card with the best features (speed, bundle, price, etc) for you, and it will most likely have the adapter you need. 😉

EDIT >> oh yeah, and you would see a nice performance boost with that setup.

I play a lot of AA too. What kind of FPS do you get at what settings?
THanks

I've only played SF CSAR so far with the new card, still haven't put in the other 512mb stick of ram. So my system is: 2.6@3.0, 512 of ddr400, and XFX 6600gt, samsung 912n lcd @70hz, 1280x1024. All settings on ultra high, detailed shadows. FPS haven't dropped below 50. Probably average around 60. When I had my 9800pro, I would average around 45 on CSAR. Ill play some other maps tonight. With my 9600pro I would average 25 fps on CSAR, 20 on mountain pass, 20 in Hospital. I was always happy with the performance of my 9600pro in Americas Army, but I couldnt resist upgrading.

Which maps are your favorites?
