How much faster an Athlon64 3200+ will be compared to an AthlonXP 3200+?

I have a Barton2500+ @ 3200+

I feel like upgrading and I'm looking at the S393 3200+ that I want to overclock to 2400mhz or so.

I've never used an Athlon64 before. What kind of performance difference I can expect?

I play games, mostly. I'll keep my gig of ram and my 9800pro.

Any reviews comparing A64 3200+ to AXP 3200+? Opinions?

I'm not sure about comparing overclocked ratings to one another, but at stock speeds an Athlon 64 3200+ is about 10-30% faster than an Athlon XP 3200+ depending on the application. Almost every review for the Athlon 64 I checked when I was shopping for mine compared them to the equivalent XPs or P4s.

Depends on the programs you are using. The Athlon 64 has SSE2, meaning it can produce data at 128 bits, while the Athlon XP has just SSE, which produces data at 32 bits. Any app that takes advantage of SSE2, the Athlon 64 will be faster. Many games do take advantage of SSE2.

Whatever it is about the A64, architecture, instructions, etc, it's faster no matter what. I love my A64 over my old Barton, almost every single thing is faster (albeit some not by much) but the CPU is great. should be a decent upgrade, esp. ifyou OC the A64 like you did with the AXP.

A decent upgrade for 10%-30% improvement? I think not. I have a Mobile Athlon running at 2400. No way I'll be upgrading my whole system to an Athlon64 running at the same speed for a meager (potentially) 10% improvement.

I went from an Athlon XP 2500+ @ 2200mhz to a Mobile XP 2600+ @ 2400mhz to a stock A64 3200+ within a few months. While benchmark scores all went up with each upgrade, I found the actual difference while playing games not very noticable. This may be because I am usually video card limited as I enjoy playing in at least 1280x960 @ 2x QAA / 8x AF with all effects turned on when possible. This was with a 6800 GT OC so your experience may be different with a 9800 Pro. Without a doubt though, the Athlon 64 is a faster processor.

Edit: I wanted to add that if you're a big gamer, I recommend upgrading from your 9800 Pro instead. I saw a much bigger FPS improvement going from a 9800 Pro to the 6800 GT OC.

I doubt you will see much difference, you might impress a few geeks but that will be about it.

By the looks of those benchmarks , id say a 33% increase in framerate...that is significant.

My P4 3.0ghz outperforms the 3200 XP by a nice margin while the Athlon 64 3200 outperforms my P4 by about the same amount ..for games anyways.

Personally I am going towait unit I can afford a 4000+ before I upgrade again.

I agree with most others here... even though a 10-30% bump in performance is nice, a new video card would probably make a bigger difference since you are already equipped with a very fast CPU.

First, what speed is the RAM.
Next, don't upgrade to a S939, then keep the 9800 pro. That would be a waste of money as far as gaming is concerned.

Thanks for opinions.

Suppose you can make this upgrade for ~ 120$ for some reason. Would you do it?

That would mean going from :

Abit NF7-S Rev2
Athlon XP 2500+ @ 2200mhz

to

MSI Neo2 Platinum
Athlon 64 3200+ @2400mhz (I hope so)

I Keep :

1 x Radeon9800 pro 128mb
2 x 512 PC3200 Kingston Valueram
1 x Seagate 7200.7 200GB PATA
1 x NEC 2500A
etc

Yeah, I prolly would. If it's $120 for a 33% increase, that factors to $360 (3 x 33% = 100% improvement = double the speed) for double the speed. Silly math but maybe makes some sense.

But for me there's an added attraction of fiddling around with something new. And it does seem that OCing a 64bit cpu with the onboard mem controller is a bit of a different game than OCing the AXP's

Eh, the money is not as important to me as the 2 days it will take to rebuild, reinstall Windows and all my software, and then retweak everything. $120 is peanuts for an upgrade though.

I hope that it will be a significant gain... maybe even a rush....takes sooooo long to work with pics off of digital camera... has been a good machine though...

any comparison?

oh yea, one more thing... mine runs at 350 and these guys are talking about o/c the same amout of speed that my processor is rated...hehe can't wait :D:):D

I had my old 1700XP @ 2.4GHz and I upgraded to a A64 3200+ that I run at 2450Ghz and this thing blows the doors off the AXP.... mainly in games obviously but it does feel a little snappier in windows as well.
