How much does the flash memory matter?

I just bought a canon sd1000 for a friend and i'm looking to get a 2-4 gb SD card. There are alot of different brands out there that advertise they are specially designed for cameras... seems like B.S. but considering cameras write directly to the flash (i think) wouldn't the write speed matter?

If so, any recommendations? thanks in advance.

For a small P&S there's no need to get a super fast card because P&S cameras can't take advantage of the card's speed. These ultra fast cards are really only useful for DSLR users. This isn't to say get a really slow, 1-4x card though. When you get into cards that are big like 2-4GB, you may want to get the fastest one you can afford not because your camera will take pictures faster, but because you can transfer photos from the card to your computer faster. Transferring 4GB can take a LONG time even with a 50X card.
