Depends on where you live. A 1500 sq. ft. house in a small midwestern town might go for $65,000. In a big city: $165,000. In Chicago or San Fran: $350,000.

If you can successfully locate 10 homes within San Francisco that are in "livable" condition for $350K, I'll take all of 'em. 😉

Maybe with a 2-3 hour commute 😉

About 1.5 to 2 hours in Chicago for that price. Otherwise you are stuck with a condo.

I know, I'm looking.:|

My wife rented a house in Parsons, KS (very small town) for $170/mo, with an option to purchase at $9000. A really nice house there goes for $40K. At least that's how it was 10 years ago.

in my area that would be around 207K with around 3-5 acres.

this is basing on the asking price of a few of the recent houses that went up for sale and were sold on my street.

I was really surprised at moving to Connecticut from Florida - the price difference is phenomenal! We had a 4 bedroom house on 3/4 acre with a pool in Florida, which iirc was cheaper than the condo we're at now...we got the condo because it was cheaper than getting a house...the price difference was HUGE 🙁

From the CNN link above, Colorado Springs is $181K

Here's the type of home they considered:
Specifically, Coldwell Banker looked at a 2,200-square-foot house with 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, a family room and a two-car garage. The neighborhood - a more subjective measure - is one "typical for corporate middle-management transferees."

That seems like ALOT of house for the money in this area. I would have guessed closer to $225K - $250K, but I haven't followed real estate in town for awhile. Up where I'm at, I suspect it's closer to $250K - $300K

For a 3 Bedroom 2.5 bath between 285K and 350K in an average neighborhood, it could get as low as $250K and as high as 600K depending on what burrough you choose exactly.
