You can do DSL or cable for much cheaper. How many computers that can handle depends entirely on what they are doing. 36 people downloading all the time will slow things down a good bit but if it is just web browsing, DSL or cable would easily be able to handle it.




 
Electric and lenjack are both right. When I researched this it was in the $800/month range but that was a couple of years ago. And Lenjack is right, call your telco and see what they suggest. If you can't get ADSL, or the license for it is too restrictive for what you want to do, you could try ISDN/IDSL, or SDSL. Or you could get a fractional T-1. Or you can band together IDSL/ISDN lines. There's satellite if latency doesn't matter.

What kind of bandwidth and/or latency are you looking for? What is your budget? What are you trying to do?

You could try this in the Network forum (get one of the mods to move it rather than repost it there). There are some experts on T-1's and ATM's there.
 
Just purchased two last month for a cafe I am helping get setup, running just over 400 a month each. Not too bad, but still cant justify it to my house 🙂.

A net cafe? What do you see the primary purpose people will be going there for? If it is a lot of gaming, you'll probably need a T1 unless you can find a DSL solution that will suffice.
 
If I remember my figures correctly, a single 1.5Mbps ADSL connection (downstream, at least) can carry the same amount of bandwidth as a T1. (A T1 consists of 24 64-bit channels, totalling 1.544 Mbps.) Get yourself a HUGE router for 36 PCs, and you'd have the equivalent of a T1.

However, if you need the same upstream bandwidth as downstream, a 1.5Mbps SDSL would be very expensive (if it's even available), and possibly not much less than an actual T1. (Maybe two 640kbps SDSL lines would do the trick for you. That would only run about $350.)

A T-1 does not cost as much as it used to. I have seen many for as low as $399, but that depends on the market that you are located in (the size of your city). In Houston, where I live, there are many deals for a $399 Full T-1, but in smaller cities they run considerably more.
 
You can always get two seperate internet connections (cable and/or DSL), run them off a router that supports two seperate connections and load balances them (like some Nexland routers). Then just buy two 16-port switches and hook them up to the router.
 
Does PacBell offer a "business class" SDSL service in your area? If so, you might be able to get speeds comparable to a T1 (1.5 MB Up/Down) for a much lower monthly rate.
