How much does Mac differ from PC ?

Hello,

I was offered a job as a Mac troubleshooter at computer lab.

However, I've never worked with Macs.

But have very big experience and hands-on knowledge with Windows and Unix.

Do you think it would be possible for me to troubleshoot Macs ?

Are they very much different or no ?

Thanks

Much of the hardware is commodity stuff. Video cards require a different BIOS I believe. The motherboards and processors are really the big difference, except for software anyways. Software is where you will run into most of your problems.

IMO, once you are proficient with GUI software, you'll be able to handle just about any GUI OS.

I wouldn't really worry too much about it.

Only recent versions of MAC OS had any decent networking installed. I remember installing OpenTransport 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 on Mac OS 7.5 and 7.6 to upgrade them to something with TCP/IP rather than that MACTCP BS. The way they originally networked MACs almost appears accidental... I only say this because it almost seems accidental everytime it works even today. 😛

But Mac OS X is much better since it is linux-like. They've come a long way. If you want to learn how to troubleshoot MACs, go out and get a Macintosh Bible. They have tons of tips and troubleshooting techniques that will guide you through most problems.

It is as much linux-like as Solaris is.

EDIT: Forgot the usual comment about how I bet you have atleast one MAC right now.

I wouldn't think it would be too difficult for you to pick it up and understand it, as long as you understand how to troubleshoot and basic computer principles.

Only recently (past couple of years) have I become proficient with Macs. I use one as my main machine at home, along with 4 linux servers, a Windows 2000 domain and a gaming PC.

It's definately possible to do the job, just make sure that your employer knows you need to do some studying/training first.
