Like to record some lines of dialog. Does it cost $x per hour?

depending on the studio and the equipment you want to use. could be 100 or up to 10 times that per hour if you want an engineer too.

$50 -$100 an hour on the low end.

Yeesh, good incentive to get in and get the hell out.

Yeah. It could be cheaper if you get a package deal or if you know someone with a studio.

Are there any good ways to record sound of that quality at home? Or will it always sound significantly less professional than a studio?

not really. To record quality at home you will be building a mock studio and spending many thousands of dollars.

It depends on what you are using it for. If you are looking to record something like a low budget commercial, you could do it at home using a cheap mic and free software like Audacity. If it has to be higher grade than that, you will need at least a semi-professional recording studio. It also depends on your channel(s) of distribution.

You could do it at home. If you are just doing one session, it would be cheaper to go to a studio.

Also, most studios will negotiate a bit on the price......

Well, I would be using it to record dialog for machinima using a few different games. It won't be for recording music or anything.

Edit: I want it to sound good, but it doesn't have to be Hollywood movie quality.

I would at least start with a mic at home and Audacity. You can do some processing of the file to improve the sound (not that I have as much skill with that as I'd like)

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't need a recording studio for that. I would buy a decent microphone, and that's about it. Open source programs and filters can let you do pretty much anything else you need to do.

Thanks a bunch guys. Lot's of helpful info.

One last question, what's a decent microphone to use? All I have currently is a cheap headset/mic that came with my $50 wecam.
